1. Let Dr. DEMMAN help
way back when when I worked ENT. We would numb up your gums and sinuses. Then we would take an eight inch spinal needle, ram it through your canine tooth gum area, into your mastiod sinus and pump saline through the needle, into the sinus and out your nose.

Dont cha feel better now!!! Here is your wollipop

2. YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:scared:

Although; I bet after the serious discomfort wore off, you'd have some pretty cleared sinuses. You'd have to put me under to do that to me though.

:scared:

6. Acupuncture, guys......
this is one of the conditions it's really good for....plus, the needles are a hell of a lot smaller than what Dr. Denman recommends (besides, I think he's got the wrong sinuses - didn't you mean 'maxillary', Doc?). But check & make sure the acupuncturist is using those disposable needles - no excuse not to.

10. DOH
You are right. Maybe that is why I dont work ENT anymore. Damn sinuses always screwing me up. But now in psych we are using ECT again.

Thanks for the pointer- If we went after the mastoid- have a big needle sticking out of your forehead

11. Wouldn't wish a sinus infection on my worst enemy
I've only had one, but that was plenty. I was back on my feet after one of the worst head colds I'd ever had. I bent over to pick up something, and it felt like a prizefighter inside my head had landed a knockout punch right between the eyes. My condolances to you who have to deal with such things regularly.

13. Chronic sinusitis
has been the bane of the last several years of my existence. What I had, antibiotics couldn't kill. Finally the doc gave me a steroid sinus spray. I think I used it for two days, and there went my sinus infection.

14. Eat some jalapenos. They will clear you up

Just get a little dish of raw ones and munch on them like dieters do carrot sticks. They are a good source of vitamin C, too!

15. Whatever Else You Take,
try taking Echinacea every day until about a week after you think it's cleared up.

I'm not usually into herbal remedies, but I've had the following experience TWICE: began taking echinacea when I was sick, felt better, stopped taking echinacea, got worse, started taking echinacea again, felt better. Once was with a very persistent sinus infection.

19. Are you taking sudafed?
I get those awful things, sometimes so bad that I have to go to bed in a dark room and I also start throwing up. Everybody tells me its migraine, but its really a sinus infection. Also, a heating pad helps with the pain sometimes.

23. Sudafed doesn't do squat.
It works if I have a normal cold, or allergies, but for sinus infections, sudafed doesn't help me at all.

20. Alka Seltzer Plus
and ginger tea (HUGE mug, teaspoon of ginger on bottom, two tea bags, boiling water, lemon juice and honey - lots). Be sure to hang head over tea while sipping. Then ice water. Then a neck/head massage and a shower and a nap. Then sudafed then repeat if necessary.

Works very well -- unless the "stuff" is greenish - then antibiotics.

I swear by Alka and ginger tea

24. yes, my "stuff" is greyish-greenish-yellowish
I'm on antibiotics.

My variant of the remedy is equal parts honey, lemon juice and whiskey.

Then I make a strong tea of ginger, cloves, and cinnamon (steep in boiling water), and I add half "tea", half whiskey/lemon/honey mixture.

It may not help, but drink enough, and you won't care.

21. What I use
I snort salt water. At night, I put Vicks Vapo rub under my nose. These are good ways to help your sinuses open.

27. Feel better
It's awful. The only health issue I have is a tendancy for sinus stuff (since I was a kid). It's awful. Saline spray maybe? Natural and it helps.

28. Best thing EVER!!!
Last time I had a sinus infection, I got one of those nasal irrigators -- not the squirt bottle, the pulsing thing that works a little like a water pik.

Best $50 I ever spent! Great for allergy season, too!

Here's a link to the Hyrdopulse, the one I got.

29. Oh, doe!
My first sinus infection lasted almost a year. The first doctor nearly killed me with codeine. The second doctor started talking specialists after the infection came back three days following the end of my antibiotics - twice.

It was the fear of Dr. Demman's needles that sent me to alternative means.

I read about a veterinarian who had a sinus infection for over two years. He had been to eight or ten doctors in two states. None had cured his infection, but the sulfa packs and penicillin packs they stuffed up his nose perferated his septum. I learned then, reading the animal doctor's tale, that people doctors only need one quarter of the nutrition courses in school that animal doctors must take. Dr. Leaking Nose started looking for supplements to fix his problem. He found them! The vet started taking massive doses of Vitamin A and Vitamin D, a trick we should not try at home since they are both toxic, fat-soluble vitamins. After he found the proper dose, his sinus problems disappeared. I'm not sure, but I think he's still got a hole in his septum.

Well, I did try that trick at home - and it worked. I told my doctor about it (later) and we went over the symptoms of Vitamin A overdose just because he was concerned. Taking just a smidge more than the RDA of both vitamins has kept my sinuses pretty happy ever since.

Like I said, these are toxic vitamins. I wouldn't recommend anyone taking more than the RDA of either unless they can find a doctor who will work with them on the dosage.

Less dangerous ways to clear your sinuses? Sure! I've got a few of those, too.

Saline nasal sprays are great. Saline solutions help bring needed moisture to infected or wounded tissues, along with healing fluids.

My favorite nose-clearers come from the kitchen, though. I used to make a big pot of chili with lots of onions and garlic and not a few hot peppers. While it was simmering, I'd breathe in the warm, moist fumes. Within no time, I'd be able to actually smell the chili!

Later, I found that Spanish rice had the same results. So did chicken soup! I think it's the onions and garlic that do it - or maybe just the steam. But you still can't knock hot peppers. ;-)

Sorry this post is so long, TXlib. I just had to share everything I knew because nobody should have a sinus infection for two years or one year or even a week.

Hope you feel better soon!

Dr. Ma
