I just had a worrisome shopping experience.
I went to an "adult novelty store" to buy a Valentine's Day gift for my husband.
I've never gone to one of these stores before, but since this is our first Valentine's Day as a married couple, I wanted to get him something that will reassure him that the fire hasn't gone out just 'cuz we're married...anyway...back to my point.

When I went to make my purchase, I whipped out my credit card and the cashier asked to see my driver's license. I handed it to her and she proceeded to write my DL# on her copy of the receipt. I have never seen that done before. At the time I just thought, "Oh well, they probably get a lot of fraud here." But now that I'm home I'm starting to get paranoid about it.

Am I about to be a victim of identity theft?

It would just figure that the first time I ever make a naughty purchase that it would ruin my credit or something.

Or am I just being paranoid?

1. No, it is because of fraud.
I have worked in places where they wanted the DL number on checks and etc in the past.

I wouldn't worry about it.

2. You're paranoid. That said, I would never allow anyone to write down my
DL info. It's enough for them to see it to confirm the credit card is yours. And beyond that, I don't see why they need to even see extra ID. A credit card should be good as is.

You may need to go back to that store and...buy more stuff!

7. Check to see if your signature is on your card
but I am being asked for a picture ID more frequently when I make a credit card purchase. They are looking for a signature match. I'm comfortable with the clerks asking for another form of ID, anyone can take your card and purchase items. Actually it does bother they don't ask for another for of ID.

3. You're in the database now.

Actually we do that where I work and what happens to reciepts is they get wherehoused and only retrieved in the case of check or credit card fraud. When you look up a transaction by trans # in the computer you won't see that information.

4. I would not have given it to her. Your CC should have been enough.
I hope you don't have your SS# on your driver's license.

All in all,it is probably a small business just trying to protect itself.

Those who are in the ID fraud business can do it without something as obvious as what you experienced----don't worry about it.

5. I used to have to write that on checks when I worked retail.
I've never heard of it for a CC receipt before, though. It's probably ok, just the store covering its ass, but if you're truly worried, I'd go back to the store and talk with the manager to reassure yourself. Believe me, they're dealing with much freakier questions than yours on a daily basis... and you won't be able to fully relax and enjoy the toy if you're worried.

6. Not sure
While that has never happened to me, I have been asked to show my license. I understand that for the photo ID check. However, you may want to call the store and ask them why that is their policy. There should be no reason for them to not explain it to you.

9. Yeah, I was really kicking myself afterwards.
I had enough cash on me to do it.

I'm just dumb.

12. I think that is state controlled...
about 10 years ago retail in Ga asked for the license to compare sigs BUT stopped writing it down. I give the D/L to my pizza delivery because here in Denver & there is so much fraud on pizza delivery. I wouldn't get too paranoid.

14. well you just gave her everything needed to steal your ID
THis is why you are not supposed to give your driver's license when using a credit card. She could have looked at it to check the picture but once she started writing things down, she definitely crossed a line of what is proper. In the 1980s, clerks were doing this right and left, and it was making it so easy for the thieves that there was a big push to stop them from doing it. So it seems either she has been badly trained for a LONG time or her intentions are indeed not too honorable.

In any case, if you can't pay cash for such purchases, they are probably best left un-purchased. I'm just saying. No good can come of having your name in such a data base.

The conservation movement is a breeding ground of communists
and other subversives. We intend to clean them out,
even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country.
