I bit the bullet.....I gave in....I bought
The Da Vinci Code: The Illustrated Edition. So many people at work (as well as a guy I like) have read this book I finally caved in and bought it. I bought the illustrated edition at my manager's suggestion because she said I'd be going back and forth to the Internet to look up the art work described in the book.

I did not read the Celestine Prophecy a few years back (and the devotion people show to the Da Vinci code reminds me of the Celestine Prophecy and the cult that rose up--and fell--around that book) but I will read the Da Vinci Code. It has everything I like...catholic church history and the illuminati...a tin foil hatter's dream!!!

While at the book store I also purchased a book on Auschwitz.

Just a bit of light reading for the winter.

9. The problem they've been having for years with Celestine
Is that everything is predetermined. Which is the exact opposite of how you want things to happen in a movie. So it was an interesting book but makes for a dull film, when you know exactly what's going to happen. And that's the point of the book.

2. It's a Good Story!
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 05:18 PM by MarianJack
Step aside from the theories and just enjoy a good chase/whodunit story.

BTW, the Illuminati is in "Angels and Demons", which may be an even better story.

I think that Robert Langdon is going to be Dan Brown's James Bond.

Great Quote in your sig line.

3. Everyone at work who has read Angels and Demons

says that it's better than Da Vinci. I guess Da Vinci made people aware of this author and people wanted more of his writing.

There seems to be a bit of a reading group at work...this is the first place I have worked where people talk about BOOKS! Even though they seem to be more conservative Dems at least they READ and are exposed to IDEAS! Now if only Chomsky wrote compelling fiction!

Another co-worker is reading the book The Crisis in Islam, I think it's by Bernard Lewis.

4. Tom Hanks will be the good...scientisty guy...
Cryptographist...whatever...

But he's signed to do the picture, I'm fairly certain Ron Howard is directing.

The "revelation" in the book is certainly a fun "wow" type of thing.

National Treasure, the film with Nicolas Cage in it, blatantly ripped off the cryptography aspect.

7. I tried reading Celestine.
Couldn't make it all the way through.

In one part, he's talking about the phases of the moon, and suddenly he's one with all the minds in the world, all looking at the moon in its different phases from different parts of the world . . .

And then my rational brain kicked in and said, "wait, the moon phase is the same from any point on earth . . . piece of crap book."

Threw it on the table and never picked it up again.

8. It's a fun page-turner
I hope Ron Howard doesn't fuck the film up.
