Don't try to win a star - just DONATE!!!!
Seriously, first I appreciate all the folks willing to donate to help out others. But to get a star from DU is so simple and costs as little as $5 to get.

We have so much to be excited about and so much to remember with what we've lost in these past months.

Excitement over the fact that Howard Dean is heading up the DNC and hopefully will live up to his "I don't take any crap from stinking repukes" attitude

And also we suffered a great loss with the passing of Scott Lowery aka "Khephra"

So come on folks, don't try and win free stars - just donate yourself! All it takes is $5 (you can write a check) to know that star is yours!!

Like my donation to the DNC, I plan on making 2 donations to DU - one for myself and one in memory of Khephra!

1. And, if I could add, if you want to donate for someone, just donate for
them without telling them. One, it's fun to see how long it takes them to notice...Two, you're not forcing them to beg for a star, win a contest etc...:hi:

5. Amen and Alleluia! I agree
I've donated stars in the past and just do it without ever saying anything (well, ok the first one, but that person has donated themselves ever since).

8. Whoa! I just did that for fun since it was the opening of the Fund Drive
I don't want to sound like I'm tooting my own horn, but I do donate anonymously quite frequently. Plus, I donate monthly myself, so why am I being called to the carpet here?

9. Because the fundraiser just started
Why not let folks have a chance to donate before we start giving them away in contests.

I mean why bother donating when I can just win a contest

12. That's really sort of unfair to me - and I take umbrage at what I
am perceiving to be a personal attack. It was a joke and I ended up giving a star to someone that I really like a lot - I'm sorry if you have a problem with that - DU still gets the money.

14. I know and I didn't mean it to be that way
But I go into the lounge and suddenly everyone is giving away stars. Why bother donating then if I can get someone else to do it?

10. I'm not calling anyone out. You can run a search. I post this at the
start of every fund drive. Sorry if I upset anyone. I just really enjoy giving annonymously! :hi:

4. I appreciate what you're doing
But I've been here long enough to know that too many people would rather just win a star than even try to donate the bare minimum in order to get their own. Plus how do you know it's not some troll looking to get the added benefits with a star.

I have donated stars in the past and with the exception of one person I've never told the person that I donated it. The donation board hasn't been up for more than a few hours and already we're just giving away stars. The admin of DU has never made donation fund drives how much money they can make but instead how many people can donate.

6. I think it's great that people are having contests for stars
Once a person gets their star, they will probably donate next time to keep their star.
I have been here long enough to know that a lot of people cannot afford to donate even the 5 bucks and when they get a star from some other way, they are very appreciative. Last drive I gave away 5 stars and only one of those was tombstoned. That's pretty good odds and I'm glad that those people I gave to are still here and posting. Maybe this time they can donate themselves.

7. Then why not wait until the end of the fundraiser
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 08:01 PM by LynneSin
or better yet - just make donations to those who you know don't have the money to make the donation. Remember, this is online and some folks will make up any story in order to get something for free. The stars I've donated were to people who I had known well before the fundraiser that they had financial issues. The fact that even 1 tombstoned person got a free star shows that we may not be helping out those who really need it.

15. Once again, come on we're having fun!
The money doesn't go to the poster, the money goes to DU...

And who cares if they're trolls, if they end up tombstoned then good riddance. If some of us who already have stars want to donate in another's name, that's our business, as well as how we go about doing it... Most of my donations have been anonomus...including one who has no idea it was I who donated...

I think it's a proper sentiment, and hoorah for all who agree with me...

11. Winning contests is beneath my dignity.
So I'd rather beg.

13. People can donate any way they want
geez! make up MORE rules? Donate the way I SAY? I don't like your choice (which, BTW, does nothing to harm me), so stop?

Doesn't seem to me to be in the spirit of giving. JMHO, though.

I think it's GREAT some people can and do give money in the name of others. As long as it's good, clean fun, why are y'all grinding an axe? How do you know that people who are giving openly in ways that differ from yours, aren't also giving in ways that mimic yours? I mean if it's Anonymous, how are you going to know?

16. FWIW, I think this thread is being taken completely out of context.
I posted an idea. I'm sad that a federal case is being made out of it. Perhaps Monday will dawn brighter. Goodnight all.

18. I thought Lynne Sin posted this thread
You know, I don't care how you guys give money to DU. I don't see how I took this thread out of context. Let me tell you what I perceive the context to be:
Some DU members take exception with stars being handed out by members doing a contest. They think that there should not be contests to get stars, that people should give money without trying to win a star.

All I said and feel is that I think just because you do something a certain way, doesn't mean everyone else has to do it THE SAME. If you're looking for the federal case being made, look at the Original Post here.

And I'm not trying to start a fight here-I'm just sayin'-It looks goofy (IMHO) to grouse about the way people choose to give $$$ here on this website.

17. I just donated Last Night.
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 08:40 PM by mcscajun
If I had known grovelbot was showing up today, I'd have waited. :)

Wanna see the needle move on the graph!

And I 'won' a star in a little trivia contest last quarter, so last night I sprung for a decent donation on my own. And gave someone else a star (they deserved it, and then some.)

Just to show what comes of winning. :)
