Grammy Thread...Discuss the Grammys as they happen.
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 08:10 PM by skippythwndrdog
Is it me or is the opening stuff crap, excepting the kind of groovy hippie dudes? (The guys before Maroon Five)

7.  Tonight I watch the grammys( first time in years )
John Porter better get one for Los Lonely Boys. All the good grammy stuff isn't shown anymore like blues and jazz, best polka disco album, most vulgar, lamest boy band, band with most parents in the music biz and most cut throat music agent/management goobers.

9. Which bands played in the opening act?
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 08:32 PM by Julius Civitatus
Sound sucked, but the opening montage was quite impressive. There were the Black Eyed Peas, Gwen Stefani, Pink, Maroon 5 (which I usually detest), and.... a band that actually rocked. Who were they?

They totally rocked. Anybody knows? They kind of sound like Modest Mouse... but they looked different.

Los Lonely Boys are very mellow.

31. I'm a BIG U2 fan
I'm shilling out $100 to see them live this summer and it's all well and good that Bono works for good causes. However I want to hear a song not him talking. That bothers me in songs. If he wants to write a protest song WRITE A FUCKING PROTEST SONG just don't ramble along with it. And that hat is just the lame.

Now get down off your lil' "Bono can do no wrong" soapbox and admit that it's a stupid fucking cowboy hat he is wearing.

56. The Allmans get pegged as southern rock
but they surpassed that role beyond all comprehension. I don't think anyway can call Liz Reed a southern rock song. That's jazz-rock at its finest.

Skynyrd's first 2 albums are EXCELLENT!! RVZ was a great songwriter and they had 2 of the 4 best guitarists to come out of Florida (other two are Dickie and Duane lol.)

61. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed
Has to go down as one of the greatest guitar songs ever written. No, I wouldn't call it "southern rock" either, but I think they still fit in that category. You're right when you say they surpassed that role, because they did. I like the jazz-rock label though. That fits well.

I sure loved seeing Dickie up there tonight. Loved it!

230. That whirring sound you hear
is Billy Strayhorn, the writer of Lush Life, spinning in his grave.

If he objected to Sarah Vaughan's version of the song, imagine how that bit of "singing" would have killed him! OMG.

I guess Latifah isn't a great one for subtlety or recognizing internal rhymes. Or going outside a four note range for that matter.

Maroon5 definitely deserved a Grammy. I've been a fan since Kara's Flowers... so the "new artist" thing is a little "trippy" to me, but I think that they deserved something.

Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 09:27 PM by Julius Civitatus
It's one of those irrational things; last year I saw an interview with the lead singer (the one that looks like PeeWee Herman), and he was such an overbearing asshole. Since, even though I don't dislike their music, I have this tremendous dislike for these punks. Ugh!

Kanye should have won this, hands down.

93. I just read the lyrics of that song...
and you are right about that!

"Holiday"

Hear the sound of the falling rain
Coming down like an Armageddon flame (Hey!)
The shame
The ones who died without a name

Hear the dogs howling out of key
To a hymn called "Faith and Misery" (Hey!)
And bleed, the company lost the war today

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On holiday

Hear the drum pounding out of time
Another protestor has crossed the line (Hey!)
To find, the money's on the other side

Can I get another Amen? (Amen!)
There's a flag wrapped around the score of men (Hey!)
A gag, A plastic bag on a monument

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On holiday

"The representative from California has the floor"

Zieg Heil to the president gasman
Bombs away is your punishment
Pulverize the Eiffel towers
Who criticize your government
Bang bang goes the broken glass and
Kill all the fags that don't agree
Trials by fire, setting fire
Is not a way that's meant for me
Just cause, just cause, because we're outlaws yeah!

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives

This is our lives on holiday

The Blind Boys are on now! It does not get much better than this. I feel sort of sad that many many young people don't know who these people are and many turn away from the Blind Boys of Alabama because they are afraid of religion. And this guy Kanye West is not bad either. Since I tried opening my mind a bit more, I am understanding rap a little better than I once did.

I think Joss has a good voice, but I didn't really appreciate her "impersonation" of Janis, the way she danced around, and tried to get that power. She just doesn't have that, I really wish Joss would have just sung the song like herself.

155. Remember this?
My favorite Joplin song:

"Mercedes Benz"
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?

Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a color TV ?
Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery each day until three,
So oh Lord, won’t you buy me a color TV ?

Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a night on the town ?
I’m counting on you, Lord, please don’t let me down.
Prove that you love me and buy the next round,
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a night on the town ?

Everybody!
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends,
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?

That’s it!

213. What a great song
I thank you for the welcome. You know I think I just took the great music for granted back then. It was a part life every day and it was so great. My son, 25, has a collection of CD's that rival any record collection I ever had and they include all the great albums from the late 60's onward. He kept me up on modern music as he was growing up and still home. Now I buy him stuff I hear and like, Los Lonely Boys, Maroon5, FranzFerdinand.

My mother's double cousins were in her band for years. One cousin was killed in a motorcycle accident years ago, but the other one is still the leader of her band.

I can remember being at relatives houses on a weekend visit many times and having them all there playing and visiting with her too. She is just the same on stage as she is sitting in your living room. Not many performers like that these days for sure.

Congrats Loretta!

Is that he's famous for these bubblegummy pop songs and he's a phenomenal guitar player. If you get a chance to see him live, GO. He seriously shreds the guitar apart. Extremely talented.

Having said that, I have a daughter and that song really gets to me. :)

He's a fantastic talent but seems stuck in the bubblegum.

I saw him in concert a few months ago and he absolutely blew the roof off. He's much harder in person.

He writes a short column in Esquire every month that is always a good read.

A couple more years of having the shit kicked out of his heart and he'll be ready for prime time.

I went to see James Taylor and she saw me, liked the dress I was wearing and came over to tell me. We sat together during the concert and had drinks. She is soooo down to earth it's incredible.

For those of you that have never been to the Paradise, it's a really small venue, seats around 250-300 only. Very intimate room and built in a half circle. The best place in Boston to see any gig in the 80's!

223. Welcome to DU, ABaker.
I would have liked Green Day to win, but sentimental wins everytime.

224. Queen Latifah, not the best dress honey
I love Queen Latifah and she always looks good.

But I think she needs a dress that gives her a waist. This one cuts right under her breasts instead!
