How many continents were you taught existed, and what were you taught

their names were? I ask because I was always taught there are seven, Europe, Asia, Africa, N. America, S. America, Antarctica, and Australia. However, I have read that others were taught differently :shrug: My husband was taught that Australia was "Australasia".

... the continent, I think, while Australasia is a region, which includes Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand and adjacent archipelagos.

One is more inclusive than the other, but probably both are correct.

And the seventh was indeed Australia.

As an older model I cannot get credit for visiting all 7 continents by flying to New Guinea or New Zealand or something. Gotta be Australia. No doubt a tourism board is responsible for something somewhere.

Australia was smart to get away with it as long as they did. Just for tourism purposes.

Think about it. TO get credit for visiting Europe, you can just hit England (an island) or Ireland (an island!).

Uncounted birdwatchers across the world get credit for hitting South America just by going to Trinidad and Tobago (islands).

But to get credit for Australia you gotta hit Australia, no substitutes accepted. When you think about all the drunks who count Antarctica who never left their cruise ship, you can understand the tourism board's concern.
