To all you Lynyrd Skynyrd haters out there
Next time you feel compelled to display your ignorance about the band by creating a thread that accuses the band of being racist (and we're talking about the original band that wrote Sweet Home Alabama, the song that really seems to get under people's skins), please read through the following threads.

2. Yep...
The LS of today and the original LS are 2 different bands; it's like calling the Michael Clarke-led "Byrds" the same band as the orginal.

3. I have been defending them for nearly 3 decades
They don't know what I mean, and they won't even stand up and scream... there's too many things about this band that they don't know.

Had no idea DU had a Skynard Defense Brigade.

If you're referring to my thread about the grammys tonight, let me say a couple of things -

I said FULS because I was offended by the line about Young, and by the line about Watergate (which seems to not be defended by the SDB), and because it came off as tacky and rude at best, imho.

How many people watching will have the benifit of those "educational" DU links?

I hope the offended here recover quickly from having to endure some other people having the nerve to state their own opinions.

on edit: btw, RagingInMiami, I in no way said anything about racism in creating that thead. Unless there's another thread you're referring to, I'd urge you to check your facts before displaying your ignorance.

6. Geez, you sound like you'd never heard the song before...
It's "Skynyrd," by the way. No vowels in the name at all except Y.

10. Thanks, I'll be here all week...
I do copy-editing IRL. It's like nails on a blackboard or someone singing off-key. I do drive-by corrections all the time here. :D

(People. Two Ls in "Hillary." Also, is Barack Obama's name really that complicated? No. You should LIVE in his state and have to see what people do to Gov. Blagojevich's and Jan Schakowsky's names all the time.)

Lynyrd Skynyrd are frequent victims. They were kind of asking for it.

13. If you go to my post #22 in your original thread...
you will find a very clear explanation of the Watergate reference.
But in case you don't feel like wandering back to your original fla-...thread:
Should all Americans carry a burden of shame for the actions of the Nixon administrations? Should all people of Alabama carry a burden of shame for the actions of the Wallace administration?

Neil Young has said plenty of stupid things. Ex: he also said in the days following 9/11, that we should be willing to accept the sudden and draconian restrictions on our freedoms as a necessity for security. Well, fuck that.
Sometimes he's a brilliant musician, sometimes he's a very stupid musician.

peace,
mitchum (charter member of the SDB)

16. Yeah man, my "fla-...thread" - why the hate?
I was surfing DU and the grammys at the same time and reacted to what I saw with a thread. You insinuate I had some desire to start a flame war. You know - think what you want.

And I've seen it mentioned that there were previous threads on the LS/NY thing, but holy hell, guess what - some duers didn't see them (and some that did might not have recognized that they were meant to be the final word on the "issue.")

They don't sing that they are free of Watergate or untouched by it or not responsible for it, they sing it doesn't bother them. Subversion of democracy doesn't bother them.

I'm sure I'm wrong tho...

My flame thread, eh?

Trippy stuff tonight.

9. I love Skynyrd.
I do have the 2-disc "Thyrty" which has stuff from the beginning until 2003, thus the second disc includes much of the material from the right-wing imposter band that uses Skynyrd's name which some of it is good. Of course I still listen to the first Montrose album, even though Sammy Hagar is a freeper.

14. From "Things goin' on"
Ask them why they spend lives across the ocean

Ask them why they spend millions on the moon

Well, untill they make things right

Lots of people gonna be uptight

They better make some changes pretty soon

They gonna ruin the air that we breathe y'all

They gonna ruin us all bye and bye

Telling all you beware

I don't think they really care

Think they just sit up there and just get high

18. All I Can Do Is Write About It
Well this life that I’ve lead has took me everywhere
There ain’t no place I ain’t never gone
But it’s kind of like the saying that you heard so many times
Well there just ain’t no plae like home
Did you ever see a she-gator protect her young
Or a fish in a river swimming free
Did you ever see the beauty of the hills of carolina
Or the sweetness of the grass in tennessee
And lord I can’t make any changes
All I can do is write ’em in a song
I can see the concrete slowly creepin’
Lord take me and mine before that comes

Do you like to see a mountain stream a-flowin’
Do you like to see a youngun with his dog
Did you ever stop to think about, well, the air your breathin’
Well you better listen to my song
And lord I can’t make any changes
All I can do is write ’em in a song
I can see the concrete slowly creepin’
Lord take me and mine before that comes

I’m not tryin’ to put down no big cities
But the things they write about us is just a bore
Well you can take a boy out of ol’ dixieland
But you’ll never take ol’ dixie from a boy
And lord I can’t make any changes
All I can do is write ’em in a song
I can see the concrete slowly creepin’
Lord take me and mine before that comes
’cause I can see the concrete slowly creepin’
Lord take me and mine before that comes
