Four months after gaining national notoriety for swearing at children, Penbrook Mayor Dick Stottlemyer has been nominated to receive the state's 2005 Outstanding Mayor Award.
Palmyra Mayor Ross Watts nominated Stottlemyer, Penbrook's mayor for nearly 13 years. The award is sponsored by the Association of Mayors of the Boroughs of Pennsylvania.
"This is a surprise and honor for me," Stottlemyer said. "I love Penbrook."
Stottlemyer gained nationwide attention when he swore at children who were writing in wet concrete, calling them "bastards."
"I did use the word 'bastard,'" Stottlemyer told The Patriot-News in October. "They ticked me off. I don't owe them an apology. These kids aren't angels."
His comments were reprinted in Newsweek and USA Today.
Jennifer Swartz, the children's mother, said she was "shocked" by Stottlemyer's nomination.
"How soon people forget," said Swartz of 133 S. 29th St.. "I wouldn't vote for him to be mayor of the year and neither would any parent in Penbrook. He never apologized to my kids and still thinks he did nothing wrong. I'm taken aback by this nomination. I guess that's politics."
