Poll question: I just found out my girlfriend voted for Bush
Edited on Mon Feb-14-05 02:21 PM by absolutezero
I''ve been dating this girl for a little while now, and as far as I knew she was kinda liberal (not as much as me but nobody's perfect) but I found out last night just before I dropped her off at home that she voted for chimpy. Somehow the topic of Bush came up and she told me that Kerry just creeped her out too much and that as much as she hates Bush she needed to flip a coin to see who she'd vote for (stupid random probability)

My only consolation is that she still doesn't like Bush, voted Democrat for every other office, and that this is Jersey so her vote didn't effect the electoral college anyway.

What should I do?

Edit: Ok, she just promised to vote for a dem next time. I'm going to keep working on her just to make sure though

One less repuke voter

2. Were you with her during the election?
If so, why did you not discuss it? Personally, I could not be with someone who was so backward. The exception is that some can be reeducated. Being gay, it's more clear-cut, since gay Republicans are a curious species indeed. However, my own significant other, in his first election, voted for Dole in 1996. He has since evolved. Change is possible.

14. Sounds like you shouldn't make it a decisive issue.
I can understand how a relatively unengaged person could do such a thing. I don't like it, but it sounds like she could come to a good position.

44. Indeed. Being a Bushbot is the new definition of "Double Coyote Ugly"
Edited on Mon Feb-14-05 04:41 PM by TahitiNut
If I woke and discovered that I'd slept with a gal who voted for Bush*, and my arm was under her pillow, I'd gnaw off my arm rather than risk waking her - and I'd run outa there like my ass was on fire and the only water was a block away.

Then, knowing she'd be looking for a one-armed guy, I'd gnaw off the other arm.

I'd then go to a doctor, not for my bloody stumps but to get shots. I can't even imagine how soiled I'd feel. Yechhh!

Is out in the lawn or in her trunk or apartment/house or whatever, and when she goes there to look for them, and there's nothing there, tell her that satellite photos proved that they were there at one point, but that's not important now but liberating the Iraqis is, and she's un-American if she pitches a fit.

You like her, right? And it's not like she's some rabid conservative who disagrees with your ideology.

Give her a chance, and maybe she'll see the world through your eyes, and won't decide her vote by the flip of the coin.

Oh yeah - and never ever let her see this poll.

67. Sorry, but she doesn't sound very smart or responsible.
I think it sounds like time to "just be friends".

If she "hates" Bush, but still voted for him, how do you know she really likes you? She may "hate" you, but still go out with you, because she flipped a coin?

She sounds like she has no principles. It would be different if she had a good reason for voting for Bush, or if she could explain her choice in some rational way.

I gotta go with the "dump her" crowd.

28. I had something similar happen last year around this time.
I was dating a guy that called himself an "independent" but everyone in his family were ultra consevatives. He made himself seem open and didn't really have that many opinions on things. Kind of let me drive in that area and seemed agreeable.
It was all just an act to impress me. I finally was able to push his buttons and get him to tell me what he really felt and it was not good. He was a closet Republican.

And that was the end of him.

34. Depends on whether you think you can talk some sense into her.
If it was me, my first impulse would be to dump her ass and run far away. And not even so much because she voted for Bush, but because she did so based on a freakin' COIN TOSS.

But if she's not completely self-absorbed or dumb as a rock, it would be more productive to help make her into a more well-informed voter. Too many people vote based on the dumbest reasons, and even one less person doing so would be a good thing.

52. any consolation she isn't alone
The reason Kerry lost the popular vote is because women didn't vote for him the way they did for Clinton and Gore. If Kerry had won the female vote by the same margins they did--he would be president. Apparently there was something about Kerry that some women didn't like. When compared to Bush, it makes absolutely no sense to me.

I would have forced her to be more specific than that. Make her feel really stupid about it. If you damage your relationship it is not much of a loss. These guys who run for president work really hard explaining their positions and trying to convince people that they would be the best person to run the country.

72. What is she like as a person?
Not a popular opinion round here, but I don't give a monkey's what a person's political views are. I have left-wing friends, I have right-wing friends, I have apolitical friends, and I have friends who would never dream of mentioning politics in my presence. As long as there can still be mutual respect, I have no problem.

But then things are a tad less polarised over here...

try as I might, I just cannot see them in the same way and I instantly lose a lot of respect for them. So I had to vote "far away". :D
