One year smoke free.
I gave my wife and daughter the Valentine present of my quitting one year ago. I would not have quit if not for my Valentines. Corny, ain't it?

6. Carry a cigarette sized straw with you.
"Smoke" the straw whenever you feel the urge until it subsides. If you can, just sit and be still when you think you're going to cave.

I hope it works for you. :toast:

27. I think it's because they try to make it a New Year's resolution
and it doesn't work right off the bat, so they try again in February! That's my theory, anyway. :)

30. That's logical.
I did indeed try to make a resolution to quit on New Year's Day last year and it didn't work. It never worked for me. It did work as a Valentine's Day present, though. Go figure!

11. Wow... congratulations!!
That's quite a milestone... a word of advice... never... NEVER think you can have just one cigarette at a party... It's the way I turned 8 years of not smoking into smoking again a few years ago. That said... what a sweet present for them and for you.

19. I've thought about that.
It makes me nervous. I've heard a lot of stories about people who quit for years then thought they could have just one--and that was it for being a nonsmoker. I guess you just have to ask yourself, do I really want to have this one moment of pleasure (which it usually isn't when you have your first drag after a long time away from them) if it means I might be giving up my freedom from nicotine? And the answer to that, if you're thinking straight, is no.

14. Me too!
Well, 54 weeks. Jan 28th. Congratulations. It was really hard at first (first two weeks were hell) then I had cheating dreams for months (drempt I had a cigarette then woke up thinking I'd smoked). Now I can't imagine going back.

Did you gain any weight? Have any weird cravings?

15. Cheating dreams are the worst.
When I get 'em, I wake up with a minor anxiety fit because I think I'm going to have to go throught the agony of quitting from scratch again. Only after I've been awake for a few minutes and am fully lucid do I realize that I'm still a nonsmoker and everything's cool. It's been a while since I've had one, and I'm hoping they'll go away eventually.

To the original poster: Good job, man. It's the best gift you could give to your family. :toast:

18. I've had those cheating dreams, too!
Not so many any more, but a lot in the beginning. And I'd wake up feeling so relieved!

I did gain a little weight, alas, but I've taken most of it off.

One of the best things about not smoking: the world smells so much richer. I didn't know how much I missed my sense of smell.

23. Congratulations...
...it gets easier and easier the longer you go. I stopped eleven years ago and haven't had even the slightest, most fleeting wish for a cigarette for many years, now.

Congratulations, again...and "have a blessed day."

It would seem that having a strong motive to give up can make all the difference. Family can provide a great spur towards it.

33. The amount you don't spend on cigarettes is a great incentive.
Unfortunately, the cost of living in NYC went up so fast last year, I barely notice the difference. But I keep telling myself, imagine how much worse it would be if I was shelling out $7.50 a pack!

32. I was getting some back in the beginning, yes.
I would amaze myself when running after a bus for a block, then catching my breath by the next busstop. But then I started putting on a little weight, and my lung power got a little zapped again. :evilfrown:
