I know I'm dating myself because it was before the World Wide Web existed ...but

Does anyone else remember the gentleman from the UK (Ireland I believe) playing an elaborate hoax on his father by kidnapping his garden gnome and appealing to the Internet via 'Usenet' to send post cards from all over the world. They wrote the postcards like they were written by the garden gnome escaping for a vacation from the rigors of watching the garden?

It was all pre World Wide Web and all perpetuated via Usenet.

When I see the Travelocity Gnome it always brigs back memories of that old hoax and waiting for the Son to type up the text of the postcards the father received from around the world of Usenet Internet users helping out with the hoax.
