for the anti-Valentines Day people, post depressing song lyrics!
Barenaked Ladies "War on Drugs"

She likes to sleep with the radio on
So she can dream of her favorite song
The one that no one has ever sung since she was small

She'll never know that she made it up
She had a soul and we ate it up
Thrown away like a paper cup
The music falls

The only flaw in her detailed plan
Is where she wins back the love of her man
Everyone knows that he's never coming back

He took her heart and she took his name
He couldn't stand taking all the blame
He left her only with guilt and shame and then she cracked

Won't it be dull when we rid ourselves
Of all these demons haunting us
To keep us company

In the dream I refuse to have
She falls asleep in a lukewarm bath
We're left to deal with the aftermath again

On behalf of humanity
I will fight for your sanity
How profound such profanity can be

Won't it be dull when we rid ourselves
Of all these demons haunting us
To keep us company

Won't it be odd to be happy like we
Always thought we're supposed to feel
But never seem to be

Near where I live there's a viaduct
Where people jump when they're out of luck
Raining down on the cars and trucks below

They've put a net there to catch their fall
Like it'll stop anyone at all
What they don't know is when nature calls, you go

They say that Jesus and mental health
Are just for those who can help themselves
But what good is that when you live in hell on earth?

From the very fear that makes you want to die
Is just the same as what keeps you alive
It's way more trouble than some suicide is worth

Won't it be dull when we rid ourselves
Of all these demons haunting us
To keep us company

Won't it be odd to be happy like we
Always thought we're supposed to feel
But never seem to be

Hard to admit I fought the war on drugs
My hands were tied and the phone was bugged
Another died and the world just shrugged it off

1. Brick Ben Folds Five
6 am day after Christmas
I throw some clothes on in the dark
The smell of cold
Car seat is freezing
The world is sleeping
I am numb
Up the stairs to her apartment
She is balled up on the couch
Her mom and dad went down to Charlotte
they're not home to find us out
And we drive
Now that I have found someone
I'm feeling more alone
Than I ever have before
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
they call her name at 7:30
I pace around the parking lot
then I walk down to buy her flowers
And sell some gifts that I got
Can't you see
It's not me you're dying for
Now she's feeling more alone
Then she ever has before
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
off the coast and I'm headed nowhere
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
As weeks went by
It showed that she was not fine
They told me son it's time to tell the truth
She broke down and I broke down
Cause I was tired of lying
Driving home to her apartment
For the moment we're alone
She's alone
I'm alone
Now I know it

2. Freshmen by The Verve Pipe
When I was young and knew everything
And she a punk who rarely ever took advice
Now I'm guilt stricken
Sobbing with my head on the floor
Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice

I can't be held responsible
Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

(Chorus)
For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and
We'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

My best friend took a week's
Vacation to forget her
His girl took a week's worth of
Valium and slept
Now he's guilt stricken sobbing with his
Head on the floor
Thinks about her now and how he never really
Wept he says

I can't be held responsible
Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

(Chorus)

We've tried to wash our hands of all of this
We never talk of our lack in relationships
And how we're guilt stricken sobbing with our
Heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip
We'd say

I can't be held responsible
Cause she was touching her face
And I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

(Chorus)x2

3. "How Soon Is Now?" by The Smiths
Edited on Mon Feb-14-05 08:53 PM by Oregonian

(depressing lyrics, but weirdly exhilarating song ... maybe my all-time favorite):

I am the son
and the heir
of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
(x 2)

Oh
Oh

There's a club, if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you go home, and you cry
And you want to die

When you say it's gonna happen now
Well, when exactly do you mean?
See, I've already waited to long
And all my hope is gone

Oh
Oh

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

4. Joy Division --so depressing the singer killed himself after 2 albums!
Love Will Tear Us Apart

When the routine bites hard
And ambitions are low
And the resentment rides high
But emotions won’t grow
And we’re changing our ways,
Taking different roads
Then love, love will tear us apart again

Why is the bedroom so cold
Turned away on your side?
Is my timing that flawed,
Our respect run so dry?
Yet there’s still this appeal
That we’ve kept through our lives
Love, love will tear us apart again

Do you cry out in your sleep
All my failings expose?
Get a taste in my mouth
As desperation takes hold
Is it something so good
Just can’t function no more?
When love, love will tear us apart again

"Atrocity Exhibition"

Asylums with doors open wide,
Where people had paid to see inside,
For entertainment they watch his body twist
Behind his eyes he says, ’i still exist.’

This is the way, step inside.
This is the way, step inside.
This is the way, step inside.
This is the way, step inside.

In arenas he kills for a prize,
Wins a minute to add to his life.
But the sickness is drowned by cries for more,
Pray to god, make it quick, watch him fall.

This is the way, step inside.
This is the way, step inside.
This is the way, step inside.
This is the way, step inside.

This is the way.
This is the way.
This is the way.
This is the way.
This is the way, step inside.
This is the way, step inside.
This is the way, step inside.
This is the way, step inside.

You’ll see the horrors of a faraway place,
Meet the architects of law face to face.
See mass murder on a scale you’ve never seen,
And all the ones who try hard to succeed.

This is the way, step inside.
This is the way, step inside.
This is the way, step inside.
This is the way, step inside.

And I picked on the whims of a thousand or more,
Still pursuing the path that’s been buried for years,
All the dead wood from jungles and cities on fire,
Can’t replace or relate, can’t release or repair,
Take my hand and I’ll show you what was and will be.

"Heart and Soul"

Instincts that can still betray us,
A journey that leads to the sun,
Soulless and bent on destruction,
A struggle between right and wrong.
You take my place in the showdown,
I’ll observe witha pitiful eye,
I’ll humbly ask for forgiveness,
A request well beyond you and i.

Heart and soul, one will burn.
Heart and soul, one will burn.

An abyss that laughs at creation,
A circus complete with all fools,
Foundations that lasted the ages,
Then ripped apart at their roots.
Beyond all this goos is the terror,
The grip of a mercenary hand,
When savagery turns all good reason,
There’s no turning back, no last stand.

Heart and soul, one will burn.
Heart and soul, one will burn.

Existence well what does it matter?
I exist on the best terms I can.
The past is now part of my future,
The present is well out of hand.
The present is well out of hand.

Heart and soul, one will burn.
Heart and soul, one will burn.
One will burn, one will burn.
Heart and soul, one will burn.

yeah, I went to a lot of parties where we danced to this stuff. :)

6. Love Will Tear Us Apart was my first thought.
I'm going through a bit of a JD phase lately. Those two albums, especially Closer, are absolutely gorgeous. The lyrics may be from a depressed person, but it makes me feel so good. Kind of like postpunk blues, I guess.

7. Yeah, Closer is really incredible...
...I don't even have to be depressed to get into it, it's just so grimly beautiful.

8. Suicide is painless
Through early morning fog I see,
Visions of the things to be,
The pains that are withheld for me,
I realize and I can see...

:

That suicide is painless.
It brings on many changes.
And I can take or leave it if I please.

I try to find a way to make,
All our little joys relate,
Without that ever-present hate,
But now I know that it's too late, and...

The game of life is hard to play,
I'm gonna lose it anyway.
The losing card I'll someday lay,
So this is all I have to say.

The only way to win is cheat,
And lay it down before I'm beat,
And to another give my seat,
For that's the only painless feat.

The sword of time will pierce our skins.
It doesn't hurt when it begins.
But as it works its way on in,
The pain grows stronger...watch it grin, but...

A brave man once requested me,
to answer questions that are key.
Is it to be or not to be?
And I replied 'Oh why ask me?'

'Cause suicide is painless.
It brings on many changes.
And I can take or leave it if I please.

...And you can do the same thing if you choose.

9. How Can I Miss You (When You Won't Go Away)
How Can I Miss You (When You Won't Go Away

by Dan Hicks

I've talked to your mother and I've talked to your dad,
They say they've tried but it's all in vain.
I've begged and I've pleaded, I've even got mad,
Now we must face it, you give me a pain.
How can I miss you when you won't go away?
I keep telling you day after day,
But you won't listen, you always stay and stay,
How can I miss you when you won't go away?
Your never-ending presence really cramps my style,
I dream that it won't always be the same.
At first I was attracted, but after a while,
Have you ever heard of a "hard to get me?"

10. The World Inside II

Reach out your hand grab the penny
A surface war yields shallow rewards
Clench your fist make your demands
But you are conquering the wrong enemy

Alone you lie naked and bare
Conscience a mirror
You steal from your soul to feed your ego
Outside you're a hero

But alone you lie
In the world inside
Alone you lie In the world inside

God of material villian of spirit
The fortress you build you must live in
Betrayal of trust faith and allegiance
You fool everyone but yourself

Alone you lie naked and bare
Conscience a mirror
You steal from your soul to feed your ego
Outside you're a hero

But alone you lie
In the world inside
Alone you lie
In the world inside.

11. "I'll say good-bye to love
Edited on Tue Feb-15-05 05:05 AM by hfojvt
no one ever cared if I should live or die
time and time again, the chance for love has passed me by
and all I know of love is how to live without it
I just can't seem to find it.
so made my mind up, I must live my life alone
and though it's not the easy way, I guess I've always known
I'd say good-bye to love ..."

The Carpenters

"I like to see you in the morning light
I like to feel you when it comes to the night
now I'm here and I'm all alone
still I know how it feels.
I'm alone again
tried so hard, to make you see
but I couldn't find the words
now my tears, they fall like rain.
I'm alone again...without you."

Dokken

"Standing alone, in solitude
holding your head in your hands
tears play like rain on your fingertips
who but yourself is to blame?
how could I offer sympathy
when all I feel is pure rejection?
I was the first one, to really call your name.
You were the first one for me, as anyone would agree
You were the first one to ever let me down
and I was just the last to know."

12. Pantera, "This Love"

If ever words were spoken,
painful and untrue.
I said I loved,
but I lied.
In my life,
All i wanted,
was the keeping (of someone like you)
As it turns out,
deeper within me,
love was twisted and pointed at you.
- Never ending pain. Quickly ending life -

(Chorus)
You keep this Love (Thing), Love (Child), Love (Toy)!
You keep this Love (Fist0, Love (Scar), Love (Break)!
You keep this Love!
Love!
Love!
You keep this Love!
Love!
Love!
You keep this Love!

I'd been tempting one,
stole her from herself.
This gift in pain,
her pain was life.
And sometimes,
I feel so sorry,
I regret this (hurting of you)
But you made me...so unhappy,
I'll take my life (and leave love with you)
- I'd kill myself for you. I'd kill you for myself -

(Chorus)
You keep this Love Thing, Love Child, Love Toy!
You keep this Love Fist, Love Scar, Love Break!
You keep this Love!
Love!
Love!
You keep this Love!
Love!
Love!
You keep this Love!

No .. more .. head ..trips!!

13. Tom Waits - "Who Are You?"
They’re lining up
To mad dog your tilt-a-whirl
3 shots for a dollar
Win a real live doll
All the lies that you tell
I believed them so well
Take them back
Take them back to your red house
For that fearful leap into the dark
I did my time
In the jail of your arms
Now Ophelia wants to know
Where she should turn
Tell me...what did you do
What did you do the last time?
Why don’t you do that
Go on ahead and take this the wrong way
Time’s not your friend
Do you cry? Do you pray?
Do you wish them away
Do you still leave nothing
But bones in the way
Did you bury the carnival
Lions and all
Excuse me while I sharpen my nails
And just who are you this time?
You look rather tired
Are you pretending to love?
Well I hear that it pays well
How do your pistol and your Bible
And your sleeping pills go?
Are you still jumping out of windows in expensive clothes?

Well I fell in love
With your sailor’s mouth and your wounded eyes
You better get down on the floor
Don’t you know this is war
Tell me who are you this time?
Tell me who are you this time?
