1. Wow! You are in a distinct minority!
I don't know anyone who has never bought or owned a TV.

You must read a lot!

3. I know one family who refused to buy a TV
He was the fundie preacher at the church my parents dragged me to as a kid. He always bragged about how he didn't want his five boys exposed to the corruption on TV....Then after church, they'd come to our house to watch Airwolf, Knight Rider, the A-Team...you get the picture.

4. Well, I have one...
... but, it's thirty years old, and I don't watch broadcast and don't have cable, so its only use is for watching movies I have on tape. I guess one could say I don't have a television--I have an electronic projector. :)

6. I have a TV
but no cable due to choice (not finances).

I miss C-Span, but its not really that big a deal.

7. me
but you do better; I have to confess I did own one once in my adult life for about 5 years. But that was sandwiched between a period of 14 years w/o and the current period of about 12 w/o.

How has it improved my life. Best answer is that I don't have many materialistic urges, since it doesn't constantly implore me to shop, buy own, and desire the constantly-changing newest thing.

11. yes
not having one cuts down advertising exposure/saturation by at least 90%.

12. don't get me wrong
i've been in living situations where there was television available.

currently, that is not the case. where i live now is an advertising/t.v. free-zone, an autonomous zone. like-minded people dedicated to removing the Man's foot from our collective ass. i really don't think anyone here has an actual lease, but i'm sure we're not squatters either.

9. When I was single
I moved, and moved my tv along with me. About 6 months later, a freind came over and asked if I wanted to watch something with him, and we decided to watch the show. When I went to turn it on, I found out it was unplugged. I guess you could say it's not a real priority of mine :)

Not watching local news has improved my perspective on reality. I spend more time on the internet.

15. I have television here in Japan...
but its all American Forces Network.

AFN is verboten from airing commercials...the substitute are annoying and repetitive drivel about stuff that's common sense...but it beats commercials ;)

16. Many moons ago, I was the type of person, that if you came to visit
.
.
.

you would have to wait until whatever I was watching ended, b4 I would talk, 'cepting commercials, and then I would give an abrupt "SHHH" when the show came back on.

Fortunately a friend blasted me for my ignorance, and I changed my priority to the point the TV went OFF the minute I had a guest.

I lived in rural Northern Ontario on a 95 acre farm for 3 years, and when I found I could only get two very snowy channels, the TV remained off, although I think I did watch some of my BETA movies on the VCR now and then.

I spent the next 4 years in a 12x20 foot bachelor converted motel room, where I probably averaged 6 or more hours a day of TV.

In June of this year I ESCAPED back to the country, on a farm of 40 acres, and my TV is SOMEWHERE around here, but have neither the urge nor inclination to find it or hook it up.

AS long as I am surrounded by momma nature, I have no need for TV.

The net is always there and I don't have to "schedule" when I get my news, I just push a button, get my fill, and then shut it off.

HOPEFULLY, I will never again have to return to "civilization" :eyes:

17. I once went without tv for two years....
...but it was involuntary. My 15 year old 25 inch color tv went down. I called in a repairman who said it would be too costly to fix. It would be cheaper to buy a new tv set. Couldnt afford a new color tv. So bought a 12 inch black and white. Little bother broke that one within weeks. Bought a second 12 inch black and white tv, brother broke that one too. Went without tv for the following two years.

Wound up missing the final episode of MASH because of this.

I did have a portable tiny tvs (late 60's-early 70s model), but that had no picture. Only sound. So, when the final episode of MASH was aired, I couldnt watch it, but I could listen to it. It was kinda cool. Like radio. I had to imagine in my mind what the characters were doing, and where they were while listening. Years later, when I had a tv again and they replayed that final episode I finally saw it and was surprised to see that my imagination pretty much matched what was going on screen.

Eventually a friend gave my a 19 inch black and white set. (an early 60s model. Wish I still had it. Its probably a collectors item). Wiorked beautifully. And then I replaced that with a color set, with remote control.
