Is anyone else really ticked at the DU "rules" wrt the Recall?
I know this might get me in trouble, but the censorship issue really, really irks me. I mean, this isn't the Free Republic, we should be all about open flow of ideas.

I'm also really ticked by the banner:

"Californians Today vote NO on Recall and YES on Bustamante"

I ***HATE*** it when people tell me who I'm supposed to vote for. I could understand DU maybe endorsing a candidate the way a newspaper might (though that usually irks me too), but to state blatantly "DO THIS" really torques my nuts.

Plus is this really a Democratic board? I mean what if Arianna Huffington looked like she was running neck and neck and neck with Joe Lieberman and Richard Rierdan, would we still, de facto, endorse the Democrat, just because he's a Democrat?

I'm not much into partisan politics, I'm much more into progressive politics.

1. We are democrats. We stand behind our party.
This is not a general board for all sundry of politics.

All sundry of politics are discussed. All people are welcome.

But, when push comes to shove, we be democrats, and real democrats unite.

I love rule on the Recall, and I hear that this is the way DU works when we have the slate of candidates for an election all ironed out. The board is for the promotion of the dem candidate.

6. What about segregationists?
Southern Democrats used to be segragationists, no? Would "we" still have stuck behind them?

I'm not saying Bustamante isn't a reasonable guy, I'm just saying I'm starting to realize what "partisan politics" is all about.

Sorry, just venting.

9. Stick to the subject.
Hypotheticals are fine and dandy but we live in the here and now and today's Dem isn't the same your grandaddy's Dem. We're more diverse and tolerant then they may have been in the past.

12. True,
I'm merely saying that it's easy to blind oneself (myself included) by adhering too seriously to a political party. Things change, and it's important to be open to them.

Anyway, again, just blowing off steam.

17. I think you underestimate the admins if you think they "blindly" endorsed
Bustamante and suggested voting NO on the recall.

14. Yesterday's Dixiecrats are today's Republicans...
and kixot is right--stick to the subject. If you don't like DU rules, stay away.

And I hope your post isn't a portent of things to come--disaffected GDF posters coming to the Lounge to gripe about GDF rules.

Why are you trying to raise a stink? If you really have an argument against policy, EMAIL THE ADMINISTRATORS!

21. Sorry, sorry!
That's 100% true, yesterday's Dixiecrats are today's Republicans, but that's kinda my point.

Anyway, I'm sorry, I didn't know that this was so frowned upon. I'm not a major GD poster, and these aren't rules just for the GD.

Anyway, let the thread die, and I'll shut up and get in line.

3. No, they own the bandwidth and can regulate as they
see fit.
IF someone has that much problem with a rule, they are free to leave. Think it should be different? Start your own website, pay for all the servers they have, the software licenses, people, content and on and on.

Go for it.

I think they do a fine job, and allow progressives the most free reign of any board I have ever seen.

7. DU is great, for the most part
but I prefer to think of it as "us" not "they". I have paid what I can to help support. We have fund drives - it's a communal effort, I'd think, though granted a lot of people work a lot harder at it and pay a lot more for it than I do.

Anyway, I don't mean to ream on DU in general. It's great! This is one of the first instances I've really had a problem with.

Maybe it's just me and the high tension wrt this election.

It is forbidden to discuss the rules.

24. Really?
I recall a few multi-hundred post threads regarding the new GD rules. Thousands of posts were put up questioning and discussing the rules.

I also recall seeing an Ask the Administrators forum in which people ask all sorts of questions about the rules.

I'm sorry, Ductape, that you missed those.

5. No, not ticked at all by DU.
I was ticked to see several "Arnold's not such a bad guy..." threads though.

The strategic move is to vote no on the recall and yes for Bustamante...anyone but Bustamante is just a vote for Arnold.

>>I'm not much into partisan politics, I'm much more into progressive politics.<< I'm not sure if you've noticed but Darrell Issa is all about partisan politics, so the stakes are rather high today.

Thanks for sharing.

11. This is Democratic Underground. Not Green or Independant or Republican
I support DU rules on this. If you want to push a candidate or a position that helps the Republican Party or hurts the Democratic Party, then go find another message board to do it.

13. The rules here are much more lenient than at Free Republic.
At freeperville, DU can't even be mentioned.

Besides, even when I sometimes disagree with a moderator, I remind myself that DU would suck without them. Moderating keeps the place from turning into a mud-wrestling competition.

16. Dude!
"NO on Recall and YES on Bustamante" isn't an order nor is it an imperative. Just a friendly suggestion, based on the values shared by the majority of DUers. By all means, vote how you want. That's what we believe in, moreso than anything else. (at least by my estimation of this fine place)

Relax and have a beer.

19. I agree that this board is censored

But if you read the rules posted on the FAQ, it says very clearly why. This board was created for Democratic Party supporters. Sure, there is a huge range of left-wing views here, but they are tolerated, not supported.

It's not free speech. It's not supposed to be. It is a partisan board.

Sometimes I don't like it. So I leave. You can too.

22. Yes
...and I'm chomping at the bit to get outta work and get to the polls.

I'm not saying I don't support the Dems, of course it's a RW power grab, I'm merely saying that I thought "liberal" thought included the right to free speech, and the encoragement of open dialogue. I understand that there are rules, but hadn't seen one that I really disagreed with until now, so it's just me acting up.

Anyway, again, sorry to stir up the hornet's nest.

28. I don't get it.
What "rules" are you referring to? This is a place for Progressives/Liberals/Democrats (hence the name) to gather and exchange ideas. Are you afraid of being shunned for casting a vote for Gary Coleman or that porno chick?

Fear the Shun! Yes, fear it!

All I'm saying is; vote your heart. If you heart tells you that Arnie or some other Republican is the correct choice, maybe you're in the wrong place, net-wise.
