The Saddest Song in the History of the World
The Shores of the Swilly

By the shores of the Swilly
Two children at play
The king of the castle
The queen of the May
Just me and my sister
In a world of pretend
Where the sun would keep shining
And the day never end

By the shores of the Swilly
Now with kids of our own
Another year over
And see how they've grown
Then we watch the last sunset
And walk arm in arm
Til I see you next summer
God keep you from harm

And if I was a flyer who crashed now and then
She would put me together and fly me again

By the shores of the Swilly
With an aching inside
I watch as her body is raised from the tide
Her life has been taken and I'll never know why
But I feel in that moment a part of me die.

by Jimmy Martin and Bill Monroe. It's a heart-wrenching story about a little girl lost in the woods.

4. The Flesh Failures/Let The Sunshine In from Hair
It always makes me cry. It's about the main character, Claude, who sings a song earlier about how much he loves life, going to Vietnam and getting killed.

12. 2 - Ray Lamontagne 'Burn' & Sun Kil Moon 'Carry Me Ohio'
BURN

Burn

Oh mama don't walk away
I'm a goddam sore loser
I ain't too proud to stay
But I'm still thinking 'bout you
And I'm so lonesome without you
And I can't get you out of my mind
Oh mama don't leave me alone
with my soul sat down so tight it's like a stone cold tomb
Ain't it clear when I'm near you
I'm just dying to hear you
Calling my name one more time
Oh so don't pay no mind
To my watering eyes
Must be something in the air
That I'm breathing
Yes'n I try to ignore
All this blood on the floor
It's just this heart on my sleeve that's a bleeding
Oh mama don't walk away
You leave me here bereaving from the words so hard and plain
Saying the love that we had
was just selfish and sad
To see you now with him
is just making me mad
Oh so kiss him again
just to prove to me that you can
an I will stand here
and burn in my skin
Yes I will stand here
and burn in my skin

CARRY ME OHIO
sorry that
i could never love you back
i could never care enough
in these last days

her tears
fell on her pages found me out
on her words i dont know what
to do or say

wading through
warm canals and pools clear blue
the Tuscarawas flows into
the prairie land

riding back
to where the highway met
dead end tracks
the ground is now cement and glass
and far away

heal her soul, carry her, my angel, ohio

lingering in
what about the sweetness we knew
what about what's good what's true
from those days

can't count to
all the lovers i've burned through
so why do i still burn for you
i cannot say

sorry that
i could never love you back
i could never care enough in these last days

heal her soul, carry her, my angel, ohio

children blush
and gather round the home she rests
so poor and gold with their midwest
moon and sun

flashes bringing on
my open eyes the lightning storm
the tortured mist felt soft, felt warm
on my face

craving dreams
a million miles ago you see
and the star that i just dont see
anymore

words long gone
lost on journeys we walked on
lost are voices heard along the way

sorry for
never going by your door
never feeling love like that
anymore

heal her soul, carry her, my angel, ohio

13. Sad songs
Sad Songs (Say So Much)

Music by Elton John
Lyrics by Bernie Taupin
Available on the album Breaking Hearts

Guess there are times when we all need to share a little pain
And ironing out the rough spots
Is the hardest part when memories remain
And it's times like these when we all need to hear the radio
`Cause from the lips of some old singer
We can share the troubles we already know

Turn them on, turn them on
Turn on those sad songs
When all hope is gone
Why don't you tune in and turn them on

They reach into your room
Just feel their gentle touch
When all hope is gone
Sad songs say so much

If someone else is suffering enough to write it down
When every single word makes sense
Then it's easier to have those songs around
The kick inside is in the line that finally gets to you
and it feels so good to hurt so bad
And suffer just enough to sing the blues

Sad songs, they say
Sad songs, they say
Sad songs, they say
Sad songs, they say so much

15. For the Good Times - Kris K
FOR THE GOOD TIMES LYRICS

Don’t look so sad, I know it’s over,
But life goes on and this ol’ world will keep on turning.
Let’s just be glad we had some time to spend together,
There’s no need to watch the bridges that we’re burning.

Lay your head upon my pillow,
Hold your warm and tender body close to mine,
Hear the whisper of the raindrops blowing soft across the window,
And make believe you love me one more time,
For the good times . . .

I’ll get along, you’ll find another,
And I’ll be here if you should find you ever need me,
Don’t say a word about tomorrow, or forever,
There’ll be time enough for sadness when you leave me . . .

Lay your head upon my pillow,
Hold your warm and tender body close to mine,
Hear the whisper of the raindrops blowing soft across the window,
And make believe you love me one more time,
For the good times . . .
For the good times . . .

==
always gets me mucous flowing... sniff.

17. Tears in Heaven
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong, and carry on
Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven
I'll find my way, through night and day
Cause I know I just can't stay
Here in heaven

Time can bring you down
Time can bend your knee
Time can break your heart
Have you begging please
Begging please

Beyond the door
There's peace I'm sure.
And I know there'll be no more...
Tears in heaven

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong, and carry on
Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven

Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven

19. I wrote a pretty sad song
it is lyrics to the Theme song for "the Incredible Hulk"

"It's time to go. It's time to go.
We can't stay here. We must move on.
The town ... is crying monster,
so we'll go down the road.
We have to go for they will hurt us.
They fear ... any small difference.
So now ... we're moving on ...
moving down the road (to who knows where).

We tried so hard. We tried so hard.
We tried to be ... a helping hand,
but all ... our work was ruined,
when they didn't understand.
That we're like you. That we are friendly.
We want ... to be your neighbors,
but now ... we're moving on,

down the road (to who knows where).
But then we know, there'll be no difference,
for there ... is nowhere that we
can live ... can live in peace,
live with all our kin (the human race).
We're gone."

Probably not the same without the haunting melody and the image I have of Bill Bixby walking down the road.

20. 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, by Richard Thompson
Oh says Red Molly to James "That's a fine motorbike.
A girl could feel special on any such like"
Says James to Red Molly "My hat's off to you
It's a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952.
And I've seen you at the corners and cafes it seems
Red hair and black leather, my favourite colour scheme"
And he pulled her on behind and down to Boxhill they did ride

Oh says James to Red Molly "Here's a ring for your right hand
But I'll tell you in earnest I'm a dangerous man.
For I've fought with the law since I was seventeen,
I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine.
Now I'm 21 years, I might make 22
And I don't mind dying, but for the love of you.
And if fate should break my stride
Then I'll give you my Vincent to ride"

"Come down, come down, Red Molly" called Sergeant McRae
"For they've taken young James Adie for armed robbery.
Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside.
Oh come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside"
When she came to the hospital, there wasn't much left
He was running out of road, he was running out of breath
But he smiled to see her cry
He said "I'll give you my Vincent to ride"

Says James "In my opinion, there's nothing in this world
Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl.
Now Nortons and Indians and Greeves won't do,
Ah, they don't have a soul like a Vincent 52"
Oh he reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys
Said "I've got no further use for these.
I see angels on Ariels in leather and chrome,
Swooping down from heaven to carry me home"
And he gave her one last kiss and died
And he gave her his Vincent to ride.
