Poll question: What is your generation?
I'm using the same generational periodization as Strauss and Howe in their book "The Fourth Turning". I'd rather not get into an argument about periodization here.

2. The 13th generation in Anglo-American history
Most people who study generations agree that during the middle ages there were no distinguishable differences between the generations. That all changed by the Renaissance.

5. Whoa .. am I a Baby Boomer?
Born in '58 -- I feel like I'm in a "lost" generation (grew up mostly in the '70s, not the '60s like I've always thought of the Boomers).

born in '59. Too young to be a real hippie and too old to be a
gen x-er.

6. Born in 1982. I really wanted to be a part of that earlier one.

I'm pretty much against being lumped in with 5-year olds. I mean, 22 year-olds and 5 year-olds have absolutely NOTHING in common as far as experiences in youth are concerned (music, TV tastes, etc.)

Lemme put it this way: I feel I have a LOT more in common with a person who is 43 years old than a person who is 5 years old.

16. um, yeah. another person born in '82 here,
and I feel pretty much the same way. Actually, I tend to feel like I'm not part of X OR Y. My parents were born at the very tail end of the boomer generation, so they have the same issues.

The only thing I'm certain of is that I am NOT a part of the Furby/Tamagotchi generation. If you really have to classify me, I'm Gen X.

10. You're 23, I'm 22. Is there really any freaking difference??
Edited on Tue Feb-15-05 06:06 PM by SmileyBoy
This scale is implying that I have more in common with a Kindergardener than you. And you know that's not the case.

I would personally lump in the currently oldest children of the Boomers (born from 1977-1985) into Gen-X.

11. I think you timeframe for Gen X is to long
Many people call people born in the early 60's trailing Boomers. Boomers, but different. Gen X is a small cohort both because there is a shorter window, and because there was a very low birth rate from '65 to '81.

19. yep... but in that 'tweener' span
I find I don't seem to fit with either group (tail end of babyboom per your (and my understanding) definition)... don't really feel connected to either group.

I'm not Gen X, but I don't believe I'm Gen Y, either. I agree with SmileyBoy, what the hell do I have in common with a 5 year old? Maybe these guys need to rethink their boundaries.

20. What is your generation
Talk about weird. I'm the one and only to choose WW II generation. I fit that category rather than the group you called Silent which includes the year I was born. I continue to be as much an activist as physically possible.

25. I am merely using the categorizations of the "Fourth Turning" book
I did not mean to imply any endorsement of those terms.

I am a Generation Xer, and I embrace the label.

Though I do disagree with how you have yours set up. Are you telling me that my two aunts are part of the greatest generation even though both of their parents were part of that too. I also agree with what the 22 year olds say. I move for a new poll :D.
