did music help make you more of a liberal?
i mean i've always been on the left side of things...i can thank my parents for that.

but growing up i listened to a lot of angry and/or socially conscious hip hop as well as the clash and dead kennedys, etc. and it always made me think to myself, "well if these people are this angry or worried or upset, then SOMETHING'S got to be wrong, they can't just be making this stuff up," so it inspired me to learn more for myself and boy did i learn a lot.

does that make sense? did the music you listened to make you more of a liberal or an activist or anything like that?

2. I grew up with Jefferson Airplane, the MC5, etc.
But I don't know if it made me a liberal, or if I was just that way to begin with.

3. Not really
I listen to music that is across the board from Motorhead to Tammy Wynette to Guillaume Dufay. I've been a liberal all my life and I don't really like to mix my art and politics - it tends to narrow what you can appreciate. That being said, I don't think I listen to any "right wing" music - at least not that I know of.

I got pissed off rather early in life . . .

back in the late 40s to early 50s when I was called upon . . . to stand in my public grade school classroom and recite from the King James Bible then pass it on to my next door neighbor who happened to be Jewish. Yup. I remember it well.

I also remember when "under God" was added to the Pledge of Allegiance while in public school. Yup.

I remember, too, when one of my public school primary grade teachers just disappeared one day. I later found out that she was required to leave school since she was "showing" her pregnancy.

Yes, I developed young to be a lefty. Damn proud of it too. And I remained rather pissed off all during public school, through undergraduate, then grad school. Yup, I was a big "pissed off" hit in law school.

edited for typo.

5. I think it helped...
I've always been a fan of Rage Against the Machine and System of a Down and such bands. And a lot of the music I enjoy now is quite political. And a lot of the music my dad raised me on was left-leaning, such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, etc. So I think it had something to do with it.

6. i hear ya with DK
but the most instructive thing was when i was a kid and i'd walk around the neighborhood with my dad (a precinct captain) during mayoral election cycles (old man daley in chicago).

the one thing i remember is when reagan got shot and my dad seemed pleased about it and said, "they should give that fucking guy a medal."
