I know most of you have read this poem before:
First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a communist; Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a socialist; Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a trade unionist; Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a Jew; Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak out for me.
-Pastor Martin Niemöller, 1945
And perhaps, like me, you see how the current regime sounding eerily like the verse above. So let's fill in the blanks.
I'll start, but feel free to start over with your own version:
First they came for the homosexual couples who want to make a lifetime commitment to one another, and I did not speak out-- because I was not part of a homosexual couple wanting to make a lifetime commitment; Then they came for the cartoon characters, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a cartoon character; Then they came for the -----------, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a -----------; Then they came for the -----------, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a -----------; Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak out for me
