A little something for hurting Californians....
I posted this over in GD, but feel it's worth repeating here.

As a Californian I am MORTIFIED by what happpened here, and deeply hurt.

But.

I heard Democrat John Burton lay down the gauntlet to Arnie this morning, and I am being filled with a small sense of satisfaction that Arnie's run as governnor will be deliciously painful.

For those of you unfamiliar with John Burton, he is a longtime member of our Senate and the single most powerful man in California politics. He leads what is known as The Burton Machine. You are very happy when The Machine is on your side, and very UNHAPPY when it is not. He is in-your-face, old school, "he brings a knife, you bring a gun" backroom politics, and he is a master.

John Burton made an announcement that if Arnie thinks dealing with the legislature is going to be like dealing with Hollywood executives, he's got another thing coming. Now, that doesn't sound like much, but when you KNOW Burton, you KNOW what that means. And it is s-w-e-e-t.

I have not always been happy with The Machine, but I am VERY happy with them today.

4. I'm going to be hated and flamed...
But I have my fire retardant undies on...

While I am sickened over the fact that Ah-nold is now the Big Kahuna everyone will have to try to get along if California is to be turned around. By no means make his life simple but don't intentionally impede what has been chosen by the people you serve.

9. Apparently someone MUST...
Or they wouldn't have voted for him.

Assuming they did VOTE for him.

8. There are three reasons why Aunald won't help California
He won't get rid of the three quarters assembly majority needed to approve a budget.

He won't change Prop 13 that is killing California Schools.

He won't raise taxes.

Other then that I'm sure he'll landscape all our parks so we won't see the off shore oil platforms.

Get over it? I don't think so.

10. Get over it?
HELL NO!

Never.

Work your asses off to make sure it's only going to be a one (short) term.

However, to impede the person that the people chose (unlike Bush who was chosen by the Supremes) is just going to make US look bad.

6. Good news
Shickelgroper has his work cut out for him. I don't wish him failure. But if he thinks running California is going to be a matter of charming people he is sorely mistaken.

11. I agree....You want Burton on your side
and this budget is going to be difficult. I just hope the media doesn't spend all the fights as dem obstruction. Remember Arnie has to propose a balanced budget by January 10th. That is state law. Most estimates are that there is a $10 billion deficit and maybe $14 billion if the increase in fees is rescended. Very little of California spending is discretionary. Later today I'm going to look at the budget and try to determine where cuts will be made. It will not be pretty.
