OCEAN CITY, Md. -- An oceanfront hotel canceled a contract with a group that planned to hold a convention on sadism and masochism over concerns that its liquor license could be at risk.

Black Rose, a Washington D.C.-based group that teaches and promotes alternative sexual practices, organized the convention for Nov. 14-16 at the Princess Royale Oceanfront Hotel and Conference Center in Ocean City.

More than 2,000 members were expected to attend, and the hotel's 340 rooms were booked. The group planned, among other events, demonstrations of safe bondage techniques.

But Princess Royale manager Jon B. Tremellen said Monday he and the organizers decided to cancel the event after Worcester County liquor officials notified him of potential violations of state liquor codes.

Tremellen said the county Alcoholic Beverage License Board sent him a "friendly reminder" about Article 2, Section 10-405 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. It prohibits public nudity and simulated sex in places where liquor is sold.
