Opinions please, on my daughter's politics and art
Actually, I'm sure you lounge lizards would like both her politics and her art.

Here's the deal; she is going to be interviewing and showing her portfolio to try and get into the Dallas Arts Magnet High School (the same school that Norah Jones and a host of other artist came out of). She is interviewing for the Visual Arts program.

My question to you is; do you think she should include her anti-Bush political ads? What these are, are animated .gifs that show her sense of design, but also her somewhat sophisticated if biting humor (for a 13 year old). I believe she has one ad sponsered by the "HBU (Heartless Bastards United)" organization. She has one veteran calling GWB a "chickenbitch" (the veteran ask that she "make sure to include 'chickenbitch', I made that up myself") . That sort of thing.

Getting in this school is extremely important to her (and for her). Being Dallas, I'm seriously worried, even though this school is a very art driven place. I feel certain the vast majority of students tend to be left of center politically, and probably come from families of the same, but who knows about the teachers/ admins making the admitting decisions.

What think ye?

1. I think you should call the school and ask about who makes the call.
Then try to find out if there's a history of things like this. You might want to try to contact some students there to get the real poop.

Good luck... is it still down near Lower Greeville?

4. Thanks, yes, it's on the north side of downtown
Sometime next year, they will be razing the buildings save for the very oldest original part, and rebuild something much larger. They don't know at this point exactly where they will move during that time.

2. Question:
Do you (or your daughter) want to go somewhere that this sort of art is looked down upon?
If it is that important to you and her no matter what, then I might stay away. It would be a good test to see how committed they are to freedom of expression, though.

3. I hate to say it . . .
But don't risk it. Once she's in, let 'er rip -- right now (before she grows up/establishes herself/finds her voice) she's vulnerable to pudknockers who can blight her future.

Show her nonpolitical work.
