When did runway models all start walking like drunken camels?
I don't remember them walking that way even 20 years ago. It seems they all started walking the same way within the last 10 years. I wonder who came up with this bizarre walk, and when and how models learn to do it. Do they take drunken camel walking classes in fashion college?

1. ROFLMAOPIMP.
I'd never heard it described quite that way, but you're right.

4. it's probably the stiletto heels
and a lot of models seem to be bow legged... I work with a lot of models everyday, including supermodels, and you will be surprised how plain looking they are when they are not on the runway or doing photo shoots. The one thing they have in common is the stick thin figures.

But if I saw one of them in the street I would not think of them as "beautiful" but instead as average looking women and men who are very very skinny (and I do mean very skinny... yikes) and tall.

15. They can also dislocate their lower jaw to eat smaller, slower models
(Or is it only snakes that can do that jaw thing? :wow: )

8. I know - it's pretty new! I watched a show on models
and they were asking one of the prospects about her walk and she said, "I don't stomp." But it seems as if the rest of them do.

It's REALLY REALLY ugly and distracts from the clothes, IMO. I'd rather see them glide down the runway.

Or maybe they want them to distract from the clothes? Some of them are really awful.

10. I was trying to think of why the hell they walk that way
and the only thing I could think of is, it slows them down. Is that a logical explanation? Otherwise they'd be racing on and off the stage maybe?

18. it makes the clothes flounce
... so they're told to walk that way. Apparently there are two walks, one is "street" which is your normal gait and then the other, drunken camel walk that makes skirts flippy. I'm stunned that they don't trip themselves and fall flap on their faces with the drunken camel gait.

And many of them do seem to be bowlegged (Kate Moss has really unattractive legs) or have legs that look like bowling pins. The only requirement seems to be height and thin bones and negative fat. Rarely do you see someone like Naomi Campbell with gorgeous long legs (though a nasty temperament, reputedly) or Cindy Crawford with a shapely figure.

17. I just called my friend who TAUGHT runway at Elite and was in charge of
"new faces" there for many years starting at the beginning of the SUPERMODEL phase in the mid 80's and here is his answer...please keep in mind this person IS gay.

His statement to this question which made him LOL is this:

It began in 1996 when gay men bought most of the big fashion agencies. He believes this is when models got uglier and more waiflike because the gay men that owned these agencies wanted to make straight women less attractive to straight men because these men want straight men to find THEM not women attactive.

So there you have it...straight from the industry's mouth..

for those that doubt me...3 DU'ers have met this person and seen his work.
