Who Made Up These Sayings That Favor Women?
Edited on Thu Feb-17-05 06:52 PM by louis c
For instance:

"Man's best friend is his dog."
but.............
"Diamonds are a girl's best friend."

and.............

"A Man is only as good as his word."
but
"It's a woman's right to change her mind."

It seems the women get the better of the deal in these two sayings.

Does anyone have any others?

1. i don't like the "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" one
the "man's best friend is his dog" is better.

2. Someone from DeBeers probably made up the first
I'd rather have my best friend be a dog than a diamond. That saying makes women sound like shallow materialists.

3. Not to mention that the second one implies that she can't keep her word.

4. Better deal?
I think they are both demeaning. We are all materialistic and indecisive? I don't like them. Plus I would trade any diamond for a dog any day and I made up my mind on that years ago and it has not changed.

11. It doesn't mean
that every man keeps his word, only that the saying says a man is supposed to. It also doesn't mean that every woman changes her mind, but some inane saying gives her the right to.

As far as the "diamond" saying goes, did you ever try to pawn a dog?

5. *raises her hand*
Okay, I'll admit it. It was me. And I deeply regret the damage and emotional harm my ill-chosen words have caused.

I'm also responsible for "A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle." Um... what else? "The best place to keep a husband is next-door." Oh, and "I can see who wears the pants in THAT family!"

I'll try to come up with stuff so obscure there's no chance a man will ever figure them out. Shouldn't be too difficult.

7. I'd rather have a dog
And the other is totally demeaning. To me, it says we're so vapid and silly, we can't even be expected to make up our own mind.

How about some others? "The weaker sex." "A woman's place is in the home." Honey, when you've gone through centuries of oppression, lack of rights and inability to pull in a decent paycheck, then you can bitch about the relative injustice of stupid sayings.

It's possible that the saying predates the show, though.
