1. No, no, don't give in!!
The first week is the hardest, but it does get easier, I promise!

Just over a year ago, I was a 2 pack a day smoker! Now I honestly can't stand the smell of smoke.

Did you quit cold turkey or are you using the gum or a patch?

9. Have you tried that newsgroup I mentioned a couple of days ago?
Go to google groups and type in "stop smoking" and you'll get the newsgroup. (For some reason I can't link directly to it.)

I found them to be invaluable.

I take it the gum is taking away the physical craving?

12. The gum worked for me
Just keep chewing! You're detozing from other the other chemicals besides nicotine that the tobacco companies put in cigarettes to keep you hooked. You'll go through all kinds of emotions. Drink lots of water and just keep chewing! You can make it through.

7. Andy, stick with it. It will get easier soon!
My husband gave up smoking cold turkey 30 years ago! Best gift he gave himself -- he's 70 now and his lungs have had time to recover...

JUST DO IT! We want you around for a LONG time...

Love and hugs,

Radio_Lady

10. stick with it
wait till your sense of smell returns and you smell someone who is a heavy smoker. Their hair, Breath and clothing will disgust you. That was all I needed to stay off the terrible things.

14. That's your addiction talking
It gets easier soon! You really don't want a cigarette, the nicotine addictions is trying to trick you. After the 3rd day, each day gets progressively easier. Remember, after 72 hours, the nicotine is completely out of your system (well, if you go cold turkey).

1 year, 21 days smoke free here. I used to smoke 2 packs a day.

You CAN do it. :grouphug:

16. TRUST ME! You can do it! I did!
I quit January 2 and haven't had a puff, unless you count inhaling the cloud of smoke from my neighbor smoking in the corridor.

I don't even think about it, except on very rare occasions and then only for a second.

You'll get to this point, too. Just remember...you've quit for three days - that means the nicotine is GONE from your body and it's all in your head now.

GOOD LUCK!

18. If you'd like...
Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 01:25 AM by Telly Savalas
tomorrow morning I can dig up some links to articles on how tobacco companies handout cigarettes to young teenagers in third world countries in the hopes of getting them hooked to what you're painfully aware is the most addictive fucking thing in the universe. Those people are fucking assholes and you're doing the right thing by not giving them your money anymore.

When you struggle either think of that, or if you're more the positive thinking sort, mentally picture the people you love and remind yourself that by quitting, you're giving them the gift of having you around for several more years than you would be if you were still smoking.

And the last bit of unsolicited advice is to make sure the quitting process doesn't become the central focus of your life. If you spend all your time thinking about that poison and how you're trying to stop using it, you're only increasing the number of times a day that you'll be tempted. I failed several times because of this, and I've seen many a friend fall into this trap as well.

It aint easy, but the first few days are the hardest. So if you're enough of a bad motherfucker to make it the first 3 days, you've certainly got it in you to beat the addiction.

Keep on keepin' on.

19. I have a friend who swears by Quitnet.com.
She quit a few years ago and has managed with no relapses.

I quit smoking over 30 years ago and, while it was one of the hardest things I've ever done, it's a decision I value the most.

Good luck.

23. Good for you!
It is very hard to quit, but if you can hold out for one week, you will find it easier. I've done it myself. You need to allow yourself adequate time to let other habits take over in life and let the smoking habit die out. I was 2 packs a day, it took awhile. Every day without makes it easier.

The things to remember are: It is a process. If you backslide at any time, it doesn't mean throw in the towel. It means you smoked...past tense.

If you want a cig bad, just say to yourself, "Man, I want a cig bad!" You acknowledge it that way. Then just say, "I'm just going to wait a while."

I found that by deferring it just "a while," it is not such a huge insurmountable forever thing. And if you defer for "a while," you allow time for your attention to go to something else, and you forget all about wanting one.

Try that. Like any addiction, it is a one day at a time thing. But then, so is life itself.

Good luck! Lung cancer is an awful death.
