My son is having back surgery in 2 hours
Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 10:40 AM by SoCalDem
and I am sicker than I have been in 3 years, so I cannot even go to the hospital:cry:

I have done nothing but cough for 4 days straight.:(

His fiancee is going with him, and Dad will stop in on his way home from work.. (The surgery should last 5 1/2 hrs)..

Hopefully I will be well enough by Sunday to go visit him..

I purposely stayed away from him the minute I started coughing.. That would suck for him to be incubating this nasty bug, and start having coughing fits the day after back surgery:(

I do feel like the world's worst Mom for not being there for his surgery:(

4. I'm sending you a hug...though I suspect that
you will still beat yourself up. I would say that you're just the oppostie. It is important that he not be carrying anything into the OR with him that may come back to bite him later. Recovery from back surgery is hard enough without complicating it with a chest infection. You did the right thing.

5. Best wishes to all of you.
That really sucks that you can't be with him for it, but you know you're doing the right thing in helping to protect his health.

You're being a good mom, no matter how hard it may feel right now.

I'll be praying for everything to go well with the surgery. Hopefully you'll be by his side soon.

7. You're putting his welfare first by staying home -
that means you're a wonderful mom who loves her son. He won't be alone, he'll have his fiance and Dad with him, so please try not to worry (easier said than done!) and get better.

Here's hoping the surgery goes well and you are with your son very soon.

9. hey if that cough persists
get you some over-the-counter "MUCINIX" - it's pricey but it does the trick

your boy will be fine and he understands :)

11. Update on Steve's surgery..
The doctor had 2 emergencies come in, so his surgery was pushed back to 1pm, but he did very well. They removed a vertebrae, and took bone grafts from his hip to build-up/rebuild another vertebrae, and fused 3 others I think.. He just went to recovery at 8 pm, so he'll be pretty groggy until tomorrow night.. The Dr said he might be released Tuesday..

I'm just glad it's over :)

12. What a relief for you this must be.
Hopefully he'll be on the road to recovery now with no complications. I know what you mean about beating yourself up for not being there. I'd do the same thing if I were in your situation. But I'm not so I can echo what everyone else is saying. As much as you wanted to be at the hospital to support your son you did the best thing by him by staying away due to your illness.

Best of luck to both of you. I hope your recoveries are swift and uneventful.
