Poll question: Gwynn or Boggs? Who would you rather have on your team? And why?

Both great singles hitters with 3000+ hits, from the same era. Both played for many sub-par teams during their careers.

Tony Gwynn, 3131 hits, .338 lifetime avg, 5 batting titles.

Wade Boggs, 3010 hits, .328 lifetime avg, 8 batting titles.

I'll take Tony here. Anyone who sacrifices really big money to stay on one team, a crappy team at that, for 20 years is one dedicated dude.

1. Tony was faster, but Boggs played a good 3rd base

which is hard to find.

I really don't know if I can choose.
If I'm filling out a team - I go with Boggs, just because I can find another outfielder.

In 20 years as a Padre Tony Gwynn was never the highest paid player on his team.

I think that makes him marginally more valuable.

They are both WELL above average defenders. But Boggs played good defense at a tougher position.

He would be more valuable based on that criteria, IMO.

4. Hmm...that's a tough one

Boggs by a hair--better OBP and played at more of a position of need. He started out as a pretty poor defender, but by the end of his career, had really worked hard to become a gold glover.

He and his wife Alicia have a foundation here in San Diego and have donated and raised tens of millions of dollars for underprivilged families down here.
He and his wife are legends down here.

Similar average... BUT Boggs walked a hundred times a year. Lifetime OBP: Gwynn .388, Boggs .415

Boggs also played a premium defensive position, and played it well.

No knock against Gwynn, who was a great player. But Boggs owns him.
