This poll is for those of you who can't stomach cheap-ass swillbeer under any set of circumstances. If all you want to drink is Natty Light with a wedge of lime in it to kill off the skunky, urine infested taste, then THIS POLL IS NOT FOR YOU!

This poll is for all of the people who are willing to pay an extra buck or two and get some REAL BEER. TIP OF THE DAY: it ain't hard to look under your couch cushions and scrape up the extra dollar so that you can have the pleasure of drinking something decent. DO NOT LOWER YOUR STANDARDS! A six-pack of great beer will almost always run in the six to seven dollar range.

Jeez-Louise....I can't believe that people will go out of their way to get a 30-pack of Milwaukee's Best.

Now, I tried to keep the choices to breweries that have wide distribution. Not all of them have nationwide distribution, but most cover enough of the country to be included in this poll. There are a couple of imports here as well.

Generally, freshest is best. Their Elissa IPA is a kickass India Pale Ale with some proceeds going to the upkeep of Galveston's tall ship, the Elissa. The Winter Stout is almost as good as Guinness.

The Unibroue products are strange & wonderful, but don't always travel well. It's a long way from Quebec & they're far too natural.

And of course, Guinness is classic. As an industry giant, they appear to be pretty good at shipping; the "Draft" cans contain a fine-tasting product. I'm sure it's better in Dublin; need to find out someday.

And I remember sampling Anchor Steam Beer at the Vesuvio--across Jack Kerouac street from the City Lights Bookstore.

because they are really good -- far better than Sam Adams, a fakerobrew in my opinion, and Anchor Steam or Redhook! Brooklyn's Chocolate Stout has got to be best of breed. But what's not on this list! River Horse, from Lambertville, makes the best ultra-hoppy beer available. Dogfish Head, Lewes Delaware, Chickory Stout -- really a porter and about the best, though I agree that Rogue's porter is really fine, too. From Downingtown, Hop Devil, leader in the IPA category, though, from Adamstown, Stoudt's Scarlet Lady is close. Hey, man, no need to get as much as a hundred miles from Philly to get the best beers anywhere. Come see us and try the best!

but it was tough. I like Guiness, and the Anchor Steam as well.

I tend not to like the IPA, but many other ales are fine with me. Amber lagers are great, too.

We've got a couple of microbreweries here, and one of them has a really good brown ale right now.

Basically, I'll take nothing, or water, over ANY light beer.

If the choice is Bud, or Miller, sometimes I'll take the beer, sometimes water.

Life is too short to drink lite beer.

Good beer is proof that God loves us, and wants us to be happy ;-)

I like most "good" beer, but like kick-ass-bob upthread, I've never been able to develop a taste for Sam Adams.

I also think Heineken is way overrated.

I always like to try new stuff when I can, but when I'm trying to save a few bucks, I'll usually go for 6-packs of Killian's, Michelob Amber Bock, or Amstel Light, since they're usually the same price as the usual Miller, Bud, Coors in liquor stores.

If I have to go for one of the domestics, I'll take Bud Light every time.

Anyone ever have original Coors? I just had one for the first time like 2 years ago, and I was really impressed. I guess I wasn't expecting much, knowing what Coors Light was like.

and not tried the others. 'cept Guinness, of course, but that's something else.

Truth is, I just don't put even the better USian brews in the top tier.

I'll get one of those little keg-like things of Dinkelacker or Niersteiner for parties. Maybe a few sixes of other imports, but the "export" versions usually pale in comparison to the originals.

Ever had Heineken from the tap in Amsterdam? Nothing like the pisswater in bottles you get here.

Pilsner Urquell in Prague? The real Pilsner Urquell, not the German stuff.

I'm not going to argue over personal taste, but to me a great beer has the aroma of the hops and a slight nuttiness from the malt, with really solid body. A couple of the Sam Adams and some of the micros I can't remember came close, but just about all of the great beers I drank were in Germany, Prague, or Scotland.

The Czech Republic is possibly unique in not having ANY bad beer. Even the cheapest shit they had beat a Bud over the head. The same cannot be said for Germany or Scotland, where I did, surprisingly, find some truly bad beers.

Other countries don't count. Had a lot of beer from all over the world, and it's the British Isles, Czechia and Germany that mean beer. Everyone else, even France, Belgium and the Netherlands, are just followers. Mexico? Japan? China? Drinkable at best.

Oh, I shall immediately remove any credibility I may have by saying that I actually kind of like Ballantine ale. Not quite as good as stuff like Hoboken ale, but any port in a storm.

I am particularly a fan of the Sunshine Wheat and Fat Tire. Additionally Kalamazoo Brewing Company in Michigan makes a nice wheat ale, Oberon that is absolutely delicious! It may sound as though I am a pale/wheat ale lightweight, however I do enjoy my darker beers too, Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout and an occasional Guinness to the list.

Boy do I miss Dead/Phish tour.

In Ontario beer at the Beer Store is really expensive compared to the states. But while a 6-pack of Bud or Molson is about $10.50 Cdn for a six-pack, most imports and microbrews are generally only a buck or a buck fifty more per sixpack. So it would just be dumb not to drink the quality stuff. So I'm tryin' different a different kind each week. This week it's Steam Whistle, a pilsner from here in Toronto.

Puyallup, Washington brews some pretty good stuff. An exquisite amber ale, a delightful, frothy pale ale,and a chocolatey, nutty stout that you can practically cut with a knife.

They make some truly BIG beers. I have only tried the AB and the Stone IPA as that's all that they currently distribute into the Texas market. I have e-mailed their CEO Greg Koch a few times about the lack of distribution here, and he says that it's due to the low sales for the two labels that are already here. That, and the TABC's archaic labeling laws make it tough for new beers to get into the stores here.

I'll need to try more of them if I travel out West again. AB and the IPA rock!

A little on the pricey side, but it's local and great tasting. I refuse to submit my sensitive palate to that swill Canadian or Molson's or any American beer.

For me, it's a sip and savour beer. Just one will do. If I try a second, it isn't as enjoyable. The taste buds must be exhausted from the sensual experience. Because my source runs out from time to time, I keep my closet stocked for dry periods.
