Then off to the public junior high (my parents let ME decide, bless 'em!) :)

I was an average student in parochial school, but when I went to public jr high I was a grade level ahead of everyone else. (They didn't let me skip, though :( )

7. Public schools for me. I liked them, but they were seriously dumbed down.

And lots of students were jackasses, and a few of the teachers were jerks (but I actually did really well in terms of good teachers), and the administration of junior high and senior high were both totally fascist republican shitknocking jackasses who, I don't think, had any interest in education, only in saving money and "keeping the damn kids in line". Fuck them.

The worst part of junior and high school, though, was being stuck with a bunch of fucknob idiots so that I had to move in sloooooooooow motion because they were mostly too dumb to understand anything.

Schools are better now at handling the smart kids with their advanced placement classes, but in my time, it was just sitting around twiddling my thumbs praying constantly that the schoolwork would engage me on some level, instead of being designed for the dumbest, least-common-denominator people.

But, drama guild was a blast, my chess club were awesome, and I had some pretty damned good friends who made it all tolerable and awesome.

I loved elementary school and hated middle and high school - I think that's because I was just a happier kid than I was an adolescent/teen, not because of the school.

Parochial elementary and hated it. Too much discipline and too little attention to the individual.

Public School middle school and loved it. Received special attention and respected as an adult.

Public School high school and loved it. Attended a big public school and there were a large number of organizations to select from.

Private school: Loved the academics, hated most of the well-to-do students which was most of them. Small private school meant very limited organizations to chose from.

All male... it was interesting. Life was much different there than in other highschools.

Although it was hell, I will be sending my kids there as well because the road isn't meant to be easy.

I didn't really love it or hate it, just was kinda indifferent toward it. This'll make me sound like an egotistical asshole, but I, generally speaking, was so ahead of most of my classmates, that I was usually too bored to care. I wasn't the type that acted out when I wasn't being challenged, I was just bored and I showed it.

22. Lutheran kindergarten in Minneapolis

then we moved to a town that had no Lutheran school, so I went to public school starting in first grade.

What does a kindergartner have to compare anything to? I liked my Lutheran kindergarten just fine, especially the graham crackers we had with our milk. :-)

The difference from public kindergarten was that we began each day with a song that went

"Father, bless our school today.
Be in all we do or say.
Be in every song we sing.
Every prayer to thee we bring."

The first day of school began with a church service.

After that, we had pretty normal kindergarten, with arts and crafts, games, free play periods, and reading readiness, but about half our storytime stories were Bible stories.

I recall that one boy had an imaginary friend named Mr. Rabbit. Every morning during milk and crackers, he would pick up his napkin and read the kids at his table a "message from Mr. Rabbit." The other kids actually started asking about Mr. Rabbit.

Public school from K-2, Catholic school from 3-8, and back to public for 9-12. I liked my public school experiences, but hated my parochial school experience (one teacher would give detention for forgetting to do homework. And I have a really long-winded nun story that infuriates me even 10 years after I graduated from 8th grade). I still go to church; just not the one attached to the school I went to :).

25. I was born in Houston but grew up outside of New Orleans.

Most of the school board was Catholic and they believed in same-sex parochial schools. So when the schools were forced to switch from "separate but equal" crap and allow African-americans to attend previously all white schools, they quickly separated into all boys/all girls high schools. I had to ride the stupid bus an hour to go across town to my all girls public high school. I had an attitude you wouldn't believe.
