1. It's a trademarked brand name
invented by Ore-Ida in the 50s for their frozen potato nugget product.

2. I think an individual came up with "tater tots"
and ketchup is derived from an old Malysian word (ketsap), though the Malaysian word was for a fish sauce, not tomato sauce.

And it's not "catsup," dammit!
