The continuing adventures of DU's resident freshie and her dumb classmate
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 06:50 PM by breezygirl
This girl, man she cracks me up sometimes, i just can't help it.

A few weeks ago, she said she didn't even know the US didn't win the Vietnam war. Today, man, she was on a roll.

We're reading Romeo and juliet in English. Today we were discussing how Juliet is only 14.

She says, "I'd like to get married at that age. And i'll have 10 kids and re-populate the world"

:wow: And it gets better.

We've been disscussing fascist regimes in Social Studies, and she asked if Japan was a dictatorship b/f WWII. The teacher told her yes.

"do they still have an emporor (sp?) now?"

"Yes, but he doesn't really runit, they have a parliament."

"Do some people still think he's a God like they did in Mulan?"

I happen to sit next to her. "that was in China."

"Oh." she replied. "Same thing."

:wow::wow:

edited for clarity. And about a million other things.

2. Do you tell her she' stupid?
or just ignore her?

She's not going to learn if you just ignore her.

What I usually ask is, are you so stupid that you don't even realize how stupid you are?

And then time how long it takes for them to puzzle out an answer.

7. Not caring is stupid.
As is thinking there is no difference between China and Japan.

BTW, this is a college freshman right?

Because idiot high school freshman are a dime a dozen. Everybody goes to high school. Even the idiots.

4. considering that this girl knows nothing
about the eastern hemisphere it's not too surprising that she thinks the world needs to be repopulated...i mean hell just because more than half of the world's population lives there doesn't make it important or anything right?

what really scares me is that this woman is a college student.

11. Oh.
That explains a lot.

If it means anything, my recollection of high schoolers in the 60's is that they weren't all that swift about a lot of things back then, either.

(And a whole bunch of 'em growed up to be not that much swifter.)

10. I don't like it when you make fun of this child's ignorance.
It's cruel. Maybe she hasn't had an opportunity to learn all that you know. Making fun of her will not help her learn, quite the contrary it will just make her hate school and want to leave. Keep that in mind when you ask a "stupid" question some day and people make fun of you.

12. I really hate to agree, but you are right...
I teach college-level courses, and the girl's ignorance is not unusual, I have found.

I tell my students on the first day of classes that "the only stupid question is one that is not asked." Sometimes I internally gasp at the questions they pose, but I realize that if I don't entertain those questions, those kids would continue to function illiterately in the world. One by one, I am making the world a brighter place.

Not all parents encourage knowledge at home in their children. Not all parents read to their children as they were growing up. It's my job to fill in the gaps, and to encourage my students to ask questions, so that they can function better in the world.

Don't make fun of her--she sounds like a curious person who hasn't had the exposure that you have. Tolerate her--never laugh at her.
