I've switched to green tea . . .
. . . instead of coffee. Nothin' fancy. I just picked up a box of Lipton 100% natural bags at the grocery story. It has about half the caffeine of coffee and a good amount of antioxidants.

Its the perfect buzz for me. I can't handle too much caffeine. Gives me the heebee jeebees.

1. Go to you local Asian market and get some green tea there
Edited on Sat Feb-19-05 01:26 PM by tridim
It's about 1/4 the price as Lipton, and much tastier. I don't even have to use sweetener.

Green tea gives me a really nice buzz too.. Sometimes a bit too much though.. I have to be careful in the evening.

Edit: Big Lots! also has a good (Asian) green tea in stock sometimes. It's called something like "Prince of Persia" and it comes in a big green box. They also have some that comes in nifty little tins, it's good too.

3. Great idea
I wish there were a way to tell if the tea I'm getting is fresh.

4. Tea lasts a long time.. Something like 6 months on the shelf.
I wouldn't worry about freshness.. If it tastes good, it's fresh.

5. Yes
I don't think Lipton adds caffeine to their green tea, at least, they represent that the ingredient in the bag is "100% natural green tea."

An 8 oz. cup of drip coffee has 100 milligrams of caffeine, whereas a cup of green tea has 45, so says Lipton.

6. I buy Stash's

It's the only brand I found that is actually colored green when brewed and it's Chinese, which is the best variety for your health. My doctor told me that research indicates Japanese green tea doesn't have the same health benefits.
Note that although green tea has caffeine it is also very high in l-theanine, which somewhat neutralizes the cortisol-raising effects of the caffeine. So it stimulates without stressing you out too much.

7. if ya wanna splurge...

...I recommend Harney's "Citron Green". It costs like 7 bucks for four ounces... but it's delicious. Go here http://www.harney.com/greet.html to window shop.

Besides caffeine, tea has a bunch of other chemicals that have interesting effects. Sometimes it makes my forehead sweat, which is kinda wierd, sometimes it brings on a mild euphoria...
