4. My family is from Jacksonville, FL
My grandma always called herself a cracker. We said we were from "Cracker Florida" to differentiate it from South Florida where people are more cosmopolitan. That was in the '60's and 70's, we didn't think it was a BAD thing...

9. It is NOT a bad thing

The Florida crackers are the cowboys. So yes, they were rural, not as "cosmopolitan" as you might think we are down in south Florida.

There is no shame in being a Florida cracker.

EDIT: The word cracker originated from the sound of the whips used by the cowboys.

8. Here we go again with the misconceptions and the generalizations
Florida natives are called "crackers" not because of some white separationist effort, but because the old Florida cowboys used to make a cracking sound with their whip.

It wasn't until the 1970s that white people were called "crackers". Before that, it was "honkies".

you wouldn't see a "N***** Country" sign anywhere, but "Cracker Country" is A-OK... AS IT SHOULD BE. :)
