I cooked fresh beets tonight. First time ever. I boiled the beet roots until tender. I then cooled the beets, slid the skins off, and sliced them. Messy, messy, messy! That bright arterial blood look. In a wok I heated olive oil, wine vinegar, and lemon juice. I put the sliced beets in and then the beet greens. I cooked them for about two minutes in the wok. Voila! Hot pickled beets from a James Beard recipe. Delicious!

I love red beets. Just love 'em. Adore 'em. Can't get enough of 'em. But I never tried making them myself. I suppose I should try, but I'm afraid of staining myself, my kitchen and my pets bright red.

5. Too damn funny! I'm crying!

There is an ad on US TV now (probably a rip-off of this Japanese ad) where a guy is cooking a pot of tomato sauce (?). The cat on the counter knocks the pot over and the guy, with a chef's knife in hand, picks up the red-sauce covered cat. About that time the wife comes in the front door and sees him with a chef's knife holding the "bloody" cat.
