1. Abso-fuckin'-lutely!

And the same goes especially for restaurants!

Unless it's a live band at a bar, and the band doesn't suck, then it's okay to be loud, because you should be there for the band, not for conversation. Conversation is rude to the band. Unless they suck, then you can talk over them.

But really, if they suck, then you should LEAVE! And tell the manager why you are leaving, so they never hire that band again.

3. Damn Straight
I hate noisy bar because when I go in one its to hang out with my friends have a couple drinks and talk. You can't do that with the jukebox cranked to the max.

8. But on the other hand, one reason the music is so loud is because
the clientelle they are reaching for are people who don't have anything of value to say other than "Look at the tits on that one!" or "oh my god, I can't believe that bitch in the mailroom said my dress was too tight, get me another frozen strawberry margarita (or a "Cosmo" if you're in NYC)".

That's why I'm glad there are loud music bars - it helps identify where the lower intellectual-and-cultural class are, so I can go elsewhere and be with people of good breeding.

10. LOL!!
You are so right. Scary isn't it! The best bar I ever found was this little hole in the wall in Fells Point down in Baltimore. It was probably a survivor from when the entire place was still a working dock area. It had great music playing (classic rock, jazz and blues)though just loud enough to hear but not loud enough that you couldn't have a conversation and an excellent selection of liquor and imported beers and microbrews.

2. especially at restaurants
If I can't have a conversation in a low-lit joint...there's a problem.

11. Unless it's good music.
Then I can handle the shouting to be heard. But if it's some crappy garage band playing, see ya later.

13. If I want to hear dance music...
I'll go to a club and listen to it. I go to a bar to drink, socialize, and drink. Unless there's a good band playing, I don't need anything else.

7. Pick another bar, if possble
I went to a very loud one on V-Day last week. Had to urge my friends to select another bar that wasn't ear-shattering.

Sorry, JVS.

9. Totally agree
You want to talk with a chick. So you have to scream? I just don't get it. Tell the bartender to turn it the hell down. I''m a 50 year old married dude who doesn't get it either.

14. How about supposed restaurants that are also sports bars
somehow and they sit right near a blaring immense TV with two teams playing you could care less about. We were at one and managed to convince the waitress to get the TV turned down so she could hear our orders anyway. And then still lower so we could hear each other.
