2. This will sound boring, but
try it anyway:

Liberty! The American Revolution

it's a 3 disc series.

Watch it and see if you don't see parallels and ironies relative to today's political situation.

Along with it being an all-around great film, its casting is perfect, the cinematography is so lush and rich, like you can almost feel the colors.

Donnie Darko is good too for movie's that make you have to think, and be rewarded for it.
director's cut

edit:
Oops forgot the 3rd. Hrmmm...
Hummm...

OK, anything by Monty Python

11. Anything I guess, as long as its moderately intelligent.
I get upset when I watch a film that makes me feel like I should lower my IQ several points in order to enjoy it. I guess that sounds snobby, but I don't think I am.

14. I'd suggest some film noir then.
Bogey and Bacall have some of the best on film chemistry ever.

To Have and Have Not
The Big Sleep
Key Largo

10. More
Amelie
Frieda
Gosford Park
Princess Bride
Ever After (you might scoff at this one, but Anjelica Huston kicks ass as the wicked stepmother)
Blast from the Past
Steel Magnolias
Gattaca (one of my all time favorites)

The above are all ones I liked enough to buy. You might also look up all of Kenneth Branagh's Shakespeare stuff.

I love the fact that this futuristic movie was filmed at the Marin Civic Center, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the 40s.

22. Don't forget to check out the documentary section
and the foreign language films. My neighbors/landlords signed up for Netflicks and sometimes slip the good ones under my door.

There was one (can't remember the title--terrible memory when it comes to titles) that was done in three languages (plus english subtitles). Great film, the Russian and Finn are both "rescued" by a woman living alone (speaking some weird lappland dialect that no one understands). The movie is about communication and miscommunication. Well worth renting.

26. I watched Amelie with subtitles last week...very cute
and they have travel films and Imax as well. I just really got P.O.'d at at the guy who runs our Blockbuster because before the election he refused to carry Fahrenheit 9/11. He kept telling everyone it was rented and off the shelf and that he had other movies in it's place, and then tried to pawn off that repug response to F-9/11. So I decided I didn't need to take my business there and I joined netflix.

27. Hope you told him why you joined Netflix
By the way, if you liked Amelie, try an old one. Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Catherine Deneauve's first movie, I believe. Good interviews on the special features section of the DVD.
