6. Cobain sucked from day one.
I remember seeing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" the video, and being totally UNimpressed.

Oh and to the Cobain fans?
EAT MY SHORTS! :-)

4. Well, happy birthday
Just think of how many more awful albums we would have now if he hadn't killed himself. No, he ended his career at the highest point it would have achived. Suicide is always so sad, especially when done because one is a hopeless junkie. Tragic life. But, that still doesn't make his music "good" or "relevant".

While I don't miss his music at all, I do wonder if, had he still been around, if pop music would have taken such the awful turn that it has. Probably it would.

Edited on Sun Feb-20-05 06:11 PM by Skittles
he suffered from serious depression and like lots of people he turned to drugs to relieve the horrible feelings of chronic emptiness and despair. I'll never forget what my aunt said when I asked her why she drank so much - she said, "I have bad days when I feel bad, and I have good days when I feel nothing." He didn't kill himself because he was a junkie; he became a junkie in an effort to "feel nothing". A little compassion, please.

26. You're right - I misspoke on that one
I should have said "while a hopeless junkie" and not "because he was a hopeless junkie". Of course, the drugs are the sign of depression and suicidal tendencies, and not suicidal tendencies coming from the drug use.

Thanks for the corrective!

And thanks for not kicking my ass!

Drug addiction is a very sad thing indeed.

Aren't there living affronts to your musical snobbery for you to sneer at?

13. I enjoyed Nirvana
and was shocked to see all those cop cars outside his house that morning. I had no idea it was his house. I was sorry, as am am for most who commit suicide, that he felt it was the only way to rid himself of pain.

Happy Birthday and RIP, Kurt.

14. I Loved Kurt Cobain...
And I also love Courtney. Have you read his diaries? Have you seen the movie by Nick Broomfield called "Kurt and Courtney"? What did you think? I trust writing on paper more than I do anything else. When I saw his sketches and the pathos of his writing I saw utter and sincere deppression. And the movie had this "did Courtney have Kurt killed" theme to it. Courtney Love is an asshole, but she's not a murderer. She's a girl who's very sensitive, and trying to make it on her own. Like Yoko & John, who they've been compared to. Don't ask me about the drug use during her motherhood; I have no defense for that. I do have respect for her writing.

17. I actually refuse to read his diaries out of respect.
Edited on Sun Feb-20-05 06:18 PM by primate1
Though I would love to, it's just the principle of it. I don't know if he wanted them published or not. If he did, then that's okay and in such a case, I might consider reading them, but if not I think publishing a persons journals after they die is pretty sleazy.

It's been years since I saw Kurt and Courtney, so I can't really remember much about it.

Courtney, I cannot stand. I really feel bad for Frances Bean.

That said, happy birthday and R.I.P. Kurt.

22. I'm a hopeless voyeur.
I'm a writer and an exhibitionist. I think that there are people who want their memories known in the specific context in which they wrote them down. I COMPLETELY and TOTALLY know what you're saying. But, I also think that if a person was suicidal, as Kurt seemed to be, he'd safeguard his writing by either destroying it or keeping it with a trusted friend.

32. I agree
I think it was a suicide. She loves her daughter and would have thought of her. Plus, Courtney may be wild, but she doesn't seem crazy or evil. I'm a big fan of Courtney's music..

How does Kurt Cobain collect his thoughts?
WITH A SQUEEGEE!

What is the ultimate gauge of Cobain's success?

shot himself in the head in 2000. My husband was the one who found him. I find your post disgusting. He never did drugs a day in his life. He was just a sad, sad man.

Thanks, Laura

18. Sleeps With Angels
Edited on Sun Feb-20-05 06:29 PM by ZombyWoof
Neil Young wrote this tribute to him, the title track to his 1994 effort.

She wasn't perfect
She had some trips of her own
He wasn't worried
At least he wasn't alone
Too late

He sleeps with angels
Too soon
He's always on someone's mind
He sleeps with angels
Too late
He sleeps with angels
Too soon

She was a teen queen
She saw the dark side of life
She made things happen
But when he did it that night
She ran up phone bills
She moved around
from town to town
Too late
He sleeps with angels
Too soon
He's always on someone's mind
He sleeps with angels
He sleeps with angels

Bob Seger wrote, although never released, "Haunted Eyes" for Kurt. I hope to hear it someday.

Back when I was a college DJ in the late 80's, there was lots of crap to sift through. All kinds of pretentious nonsense, sloppy half-assed snotty crap embraced by the twits I went to school with in order to boost their 'cool' factor. But "Bleach" was a gem in the rough.

Hell, if I came from Aberdeen, WA, I would have been angry too. Kurt was the real thing in a business where they are in short supply. His late-career discovery of Leadbelly served him well on "Unplugged", and I imagine he would have continued to explore old music to help him keep evolving.

And thanks to Kurt for knifing spandex-butt-rock in its soulless pooched-lips heart. That was no small feat.

He wase very talented, and I'm a fan of his work.

I think the stale copycats (Creed, Staind, new 3 Doors Down, etc.) would have come if he died or not.
