New Fad: Give Jesus credit 4 what is obviously done by others
When your mom passes the corn at dinner say, "Thank you Jesus for passing the corn."

Note: This is a funamentalist bashing thread so don't even say I am bashing Christians!

3. Terrell Owens is a shining example
He has the latest technology and scores of healthcare practitioners working on his ankle around the clock, yet it was "God" who healed him.

Right.

With all of the crap exploding around the world, "God" make Owens a top priority.

Well, it was a big game y'know.

Every time I see a wide receiver catch a long touchdown pass, and point to the sky, I want to scream "Dude! The quarterback who threw that perfect spiral is 15 yards to your left!"

5. i don't see what's wrong with that
Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 11:54 AM by mark414
i mean i'm not a religious person so maybe that's why i don't get offended (don't know if you are either)

but if you believe in God and that the talents and skills you have are God given, then who else are you going to thank?

rapper mos def said this on his new album, and like i said i'm not religious but i still found it really damn powerful:

"If you see or hear goodness from me
Then that goodness is from The Creator
You should be thankful to The Creator for all of that
'Cause I'm not the architect of that
I'm only the...the recipient
If you see weakness or shortcoming in me
It's from my own weakness or shortcoming
And I ask The Creator and the people to forgive me for that"

i'd imagine that that's the reason players don't blame God for their losses

i mean, if he's omnipotent and omniscient, why COULDN'T he watch a football game while attending to other matters? wouldn't he be limited were he unable to do that?

so anyways, that's the end of my very serious reply to your casual post

10. I get offended because I am not "God"
yet i work very hard with people like this, and never get the gratitude or recognition for the work I do. There are many people out there who would benefit from this work, and Owens and people like him refuse to open the public's eye to the rehabilitation options that are available to them.
Meanwhile, people in my line of work continue to struggle to get the word out that what we do is beneficial, necessary in some cases, and can improve the lives of people who suffer.
I don't see why it's so hard to thank the people directly responsible for your recovery in the same breath as thanking God. Maybe next time Terrell shreds his ankle, and breaks his fibula, we won't return his calls, and just let God handle it.

I somehow can't believe that God, being omnipotent and omniscient, would choose to touch Terrell Owen's ankle, yet allow 1500 soldiers die in an illegal war, let hundreds of thousands of innocent people die in a tsunami, and continue to turn a blind eye while his children are being robbed blind by a moron in the white house.

It's not about being limited, it's about priorities.

God doesn't give you talent, you work at it, and develop it. God doesn't throw the game winning touchdown, or allow you to catch it, you practice it. Just like God doesn't start wars or murder people in his own name, we do.

When things go right, we give thanks and glory to God, and when they don't go well, we sit around and wonder what the hell happened.

A long time ago, our church hired an evangelical minister to preach to our congregation, and proselytize to our community. He bought a trailer and put it on the church grounds, and lived there, in the parking lot. On day, there was a fierce storm that knocked a tree down, right through the roof of the trailer.
"This is God testing my faith" he said.
No, it was a tree falling through your roof, I thought.
We banded together as a congregation, and worked around the clock to fix his trailer, and in 7 days, it was better than new.
That Sunday, the minister got up in front of the congregation, and said "God has blessed me, and fixed my home, it is truly a miracle!"
No, it was a boatload of people working their asses off all week long, I thought.

The moral of the story: There are a lot of good people who do a lot of wonderful work, who do it because it's the right thing to do, and they have hearts of gold. Appreciate them.

People whom you appreciate, tend to stick around, and that is the mightiest of double edged swords.

12. I find that kind of disgusting, actually
Anything good = god

Anything bad - human

I think that's a pretty repulsive philosophy. It's the "we are all sinners" thing all over again. We're filthy and worthless and in need of salvation from some sort of higher power.

As a humanist, I find that kind of thinking repugnant.

6. A couple of years ago I was riding in my mom's car
which she had recently bought at an auction. Right as she was telling me how God provided her with a good vehicle that hadn't given her any problems she drove too close to a telephone booth in the middle of a parking lot and took out her driver's side rear view mirror. Of course I was upset her car got damaged but I saw that as rather ironic.

9. No problem till they start identifying the acts of the American military
with God acting in human history as was spoken of in the Bible. Then its a huge problem.
