ZOT! I think my house just got struck by lightning.
Actually, about 20 minutes ago. I was sitting here at the computer when it hit. The power went off for a few seconds then came back on. I went out in the rain and checked for fire. Everything looked OK. My three ham radio antennas look OK too. All of the antennas were disconnected from the radios, and the radios were not plugged in. I guess my computer is fine. I'm surprised nothing seems to be damaged.

1. Sounds like we got hit about the same time.
You're in Western NC aren't you? I'm in far N. GA. I think we got hit about the same time. Lightning has been flickering the electricity all day, but we just got a close one that took out my phone line surge protector. I heard a pop and the internet went dead. I had to scrounge up another one.

3. N. Georgia is covered in lightning. Check out this site:

I am in southwestern Transylvania County, near the northern tip of Lake Jocassee.

8. Whew. That's a cool map, it'd be cooler
if it didn't have all that red blotched over the top of me.

We've had even worse lightning here. Last summer, we had some storms that were slowly drifting to the southwest (odd) and went right over us. When I say drifting, I mean they must have been going a full three miles an hour. We had constant cloud to ground lightning for a good two hours. It was just blasting around us. We're on a hill and we were just waiting for the house to get hit. Luckily, we only got some EM from a close one that took out the LNB on the sat dish.

2. You might want to check the electronics
See if the surge protectors worked.

5. Everything seems OK.
However, I'll be unplugging the computer shortly. Another line of strong thunderstorms is moving in from the west. I'm watching it close on radar right now.

4. That happened to us
twice and everything was fine. It was quite the experience, we got hit twice that week and nothing happened but boy did it scare the crap out of the dogs! *BANG* Hope it does not happen again to you.

6. Are you having a big fat thunderstorm?
I LOVE big, fat thunderstorms!

Except when you get zotted. Then they're not so great.

7. Hey man, make sure your house is not on fire.
Down the street from me someone's house got struck and it set on fire while they were out for a bit. It burned a hole in the roof before the fire department put it out.

9. Check out several things
TV's, any electronic equipment, microwave, electric range, telephones, answering machines etc.

We had it hit a tree outside my dining room window seat and boy did affect things in weird ways. I went to use the microwave which was on that side of the house, and the microwaves turned 1/2 my white dish black. Turned on the kitchen tv and the color was pulled to the bottom of the screen. Lost a 36" tv and some other electronic equipment too.

10. I've been unplugged for about an hour.
We got clobbered by that second line of storms too. Check out the latest lightning strike plots at LightningStorm.com:

12. If your house was hit by lightening, there won't be a doubt in your mind.
It is LOUD. VERY loud. And there would most certianly be fire, or at least smoke. And you would have felt it.
