Deer season starts on November 1st this year in Tx. I would like to hear from all of the hunters here at DU on what they killed for the weekend. I have off 5 weekends in a row and Mondays too plus Thanksgiving weekend. I hunt in Menard County very near Fort McKavett. I will start a thread on Sundays or Mondays and keep it kicked so everyone that hunts here at DU can add comments. Good luck to all the hunters here at DU. I kill my 5 deer every year and hopefully this year I will be able to do it again. Antlermax mixed with corn makes for some very nice racks. We have noticed an improvement for the last 5 years. 2. We have our shooting lanes set up in different directions.

We shoot in opposite directions, not towards each other. Also there are 1200 acres surrounding us. We have never messed up yet, and won't hopefully. One time the neighbor was chasing down a blue hawaiian ram and winged one into our camp. I yelled - Hey - Watch That Shit. I know he did it. He usually comes down for a beer after dark on the weekends he is there. He didn't come down that weekend and I heard his truck. They drive to the stands. That is how I know he did it. We are okay though. Everyone out there is pretty nice. We don't have any theft or poaching problems at all.

3. Meat is Murder!

I use an old 30-30 that doen't feed properly and is a single shot rifle at this point.

Here's a typical opening day. Kids wake me up, saying there are deer in the back yard. I grab my rifle, 1 round, and (in my underwear), quietly step on the back porch and pop one.

I then go back inside and make coffee, get dressed, drink 1 cup of coffee. By then the deer is bled to death and can be processed.

So many folks hunt in Pennsylvania that most schools in the state give the Monday after Thanksgiving as a day off. If they didn't half of the kids in the school wouldn't show up anyways.

I have no problem with hunting although I am not a hunter nor do I own a gun. My only issue is that you use what you kill. I've read too many times that people hunt, kill and then discard of the body because they don't really like the meat (or they just kill it for the skin and/or antlers).

I also know of places in PA where you can donate your kill so they can use the meat to help out with homeless shelters.

6. I use every pound of it.

Besides a few backstraps, I will get hard salami, and 50-50 spicy smoked sausage processed. The backstraps make excellent chili cubes, jerky, stew, and chicken fried steak. My BP Dr. told me it is extremely healthy to eat it. It has no fat at all and it has the good kind of cholesterol. Yummy.

I haven't hunted in a long time, but my buddy down the street is an avid hunter/fisher/shrimper/crabber/gardener. I usually swap him a favor or something of value for some venison. Wish they'd raise it domestically and had it down at the Winn-Dixie.

14. Long Island too

On Shelter Island there is a meat pantry - a volunteer butchers the deer and it's there for the asking to residents. I don't right now recall exactly what the details are: it may be if you kill over a certain number, you have to donate the meat (but that doesn't sound like the Island Way); maybe you can donate if you want (more like the Island Way, but not exactly what I remember as being correct...) I don't know what is done with the skins or antlers, but that could be a source of revenue for the town (Supervisor Williams, are you listening?)

7. La Salle County and Zavala County

I'm not going to be able to make it down too many times this year. I've been hunting with my dad for years but this year his health isn't too good so we're probably only going to be able to make it down once.

I've already got plans to hunt two other times (one on our family's place in La Salle about eight miles outside of Cotulla and another with two friends in Zavala County) but its not going to be the same without my dad.

On edit: I'm looking forward to the first venison steaks on the grill!

8. We have these elk farms...

...Right near the main road into town. It's hilarious this time of year when the hunters start rolling in. For some reason, they like to pull off and stare at the elk in the pens.

FWIW, I'm all for hunting, especially around here. For lots of folks, it's the only meat they afford all year.

10. Right now only bow hunting is open in Wisconsin

Gun season starts the weekend before Thanksgiving and for my family is a tradition, including the women. Thanks to the presence of CWD up here, there will be little baiting or feeding. Last winter was not kind to deer and with no feeding, we had a large die-off so chances don't look good in some areas.

I look forward to having a full freezer every fall. Venison sausage, roasts and stew meat is the best. Good Luck, TX hunters and enjoy.

19. Mmmmmm.... wish I could do hunting this year!

My dad used to get his deer processed into the MOST INCREDIBLE hotdogs and ring bologna (not that shitty kind of bologna Oscar Mayer makes for sandwiches, but the true ring bologna). MAN O MAN was that stuff tasty. Processor mixed in some beef and pork, I think, and had a phenomenal spice mix that went in. God, if my stomach could handle, I'd eat ten pounds just to keep that taste in my mouth.

Good luck with the hunting! Five deer limit - WI never aloows that much. You can get a buck, and if lucky, can get a doe permit. And one more deer via bow, if you get a bow license.

And don't let the anti-hunting assholes get you down. They're just assholes. Unless they're true vegans, then they at least have a point, and I can't fault them for being anti-hunting.

22. I have a canadian friend who goes hunting every year

Fills his deep freezer with deer or elk for the whole winter, and then some.

Yummy stuff.

If I had room and a freezer to store the meat (and if I thought there was a chance KCDem would let me own a hunting rifle) I might consider hunting to satisfy my meat cravings.

She doesn't eat mammals (she'll eat fish and poultry, though), and won't buy beef.

I suppose I don't actually have to *own* my own rifle to go hunting. I bet some of our neighbors have a spare hunting rifle, and might be willing to take me on a hunting expedition, if I asked nicely. I'd still need a deep freezer, though...

26. What Passes For "Hunting" In Texas........

....is referred to as "aiming," elsewhere.

The standard arrangement for the overwhelming majority of deer "hunting" in Texas involves sitting in a small box with a scoped, high-powered rifle, waiting for an electronic device to loudly spew a bunch of corn on the ground not too far away. A herd of hungry deer promptly shows up, and the "hunter" guns down the one of his choice. Nothing more than "aiming" is involved.

I pursued this "sport" for a number of years, then I gave it up; it just wasn't any fun.

Seems like there be more "sport" in using a bow. Maybe not, I don't know... I'm not a hunter, because I don't like killing things. That being said, I'm not against it either.
