1. An Actifed knock-off has been working quite well for me
I can tell when it's wearing off because my throat gets sore and lumpy feeling.

When all else fails, a good, hot, lemon and brandy toddy (equal parts lemon, brandy and water, with a little sugar if you need it) always makes me feel better. It won't necessarily take care of the sniffles, but you won't care after a couple of these.

3. A BIG box of tissues, some vicks vaporub for the outside of your nose, and
Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 05:55 PM by BrklynLiberal
some benedryl antihistamine for sinus headaches.
Lots of chicken soup. If you cannot get homemade, go to a local Kosher Deli. Needs an onion, carrot, dill, and that other stuff that you don't find in the canned stuff.
Stay very warm. Get as much sleep as you possibly can.
Lots and lots of Vitamin C..almost to the point of getting the runs from it.
Sleep on two pillows so your head is a bit elevated. This might help you get some sleep. (Helps with the congestion.)

EDIT: Hot tea with lemon and honey is good.
If you get a sore throat, gargle with salty water. Make the water as hot as you can stand it(not boiling! Hot from the tap.), and then put a good amount of salt into it.
Do this frequently.

If you have a humidifier or vaporizer, that would help too.

4. Steam yourself
ie put a pot of water to boil (I even add a couple of cloves of garlic), take it off and inhale the steam with a towel over your head. Watch so you don't burn yourself initially. Do this a number of times per day. If you have a hot air humidifier for night time (unless you live in a humid climate), that's also helpful.

Also...ginger tea is great, it helps to sweat it out. Just buy some ginger root from the supermarket (I get a big one for about 50 cents), and bring some water to a rolling boil. Peel the ginger root, slice it (personally, I use about 3 thicker slices for every cup)and then let it simmer for about 15 minutes. Drink with honey added...and if you can stand it, add a dash of cayenne pepper as well.

Works like a charm. And lots of vitamin C.

Hope you feel better soon.

6. I'm using the Zicam dissolvable losenges
and they seem to work well, though it might be too late for you on those, cuz you're supposed to start at the onset of the illness, plus they're damned expensive to take every 3 hours - you go through a bottle every 2.5 days for 2 weeks or so.

This is only the 2nd time I've used them, and both times it *seems* to have helped, but it's hard to know if it actually is.

15. At any drug store or biggish supermarket
in the cold medicine section. They're basically zinc losenges, but some people swear by them. Their main product is a nasal mist, but Zicam is actively being sued by people who claim to have lost their sense of smell from using it.

It's main competitor is ColdEaze, which are also zinc losenges, which other people swear by, but I've never had any luck with.

You can also buy this stuff at Drugstore.com, which is a good idea if you decide you like it, because you save $2-3/bottle, which adds up...

17. a cold has to run its course
but I can sympathize. Not too many weeks ago I caught the flu and I was a phlegm-head.

Vicks vapor rub can keep you from being too stuffy to breathe.

Drink plenty of fluids. Get plenty of rest.
