Yes, for this poll you have to choose.
Imagine that you are going to be locked in a prison cell for 10 years and you have the choice of one cat or one dog to be your solitary companion.

I don't think prisons allow either cats or dogs. That's just my guess.

My cats won't protect me from a thief, but they do fight off the other cats and eat the away the mouse population. They require very little care, but,

THEY DO FOLLOW ME EVERYWHERE!

Thank goodness they cannot yet outrun the car.

9. In my imaginary progressive prison one pet is allowed per prisoner

and as I prefer dogs, especially large dogs, he would not be able to leave. He would not leave anyway, since he is loyal and devoted.
All but the fattest cats would be able to fit out through the bars in my imaginary progressive prison cell, so only loyalty could hold them in.

10. Dogs require more food and attention

Good thing about dogs, they love you no matter what. Cats eat less, will chase after mice, and can fit in smaller places, such as jail cells.

Oh yeah, if you choose a dog you get to walk it every day a few times. If you choose the cat someone will exchange the litter box once a day.
