Americans: Who's your favorite Canadian band/musician?

I'm just trying to get a handle on what you guys like. I mean, I'm no fan of say, The Tragically Hip, but I can't for the life of me figure out why they can't do butkiss down there while Alanis Morissette and the Barenaked Ladies are revered.

Plus, I'm bored. :)

I love them; they would have to be in my Top Ten favorite bands of all time. Just a consistently great band throughout their career.

Neil Young is awesome, too.

In terms of new bands, despite being pretty young my music tastes tend to gravitate to stuff from before I was born, so I'm not as up on new stuff as I should be. Of "new" bands I'd have to say my favorite is Our Lady Peace.

And I have to give an honorable mention to the Poppy Family. I figure they aren't known in America (maybe in Canada, too) for much beyond the undeservedly-bashed "Which Way You Goin', Billy?" But their two albums from the early seventies have some awesome stuff. The debut is an indescribably awesome blend of easy listening, folk, country, and psychedelia (with its prominent use of the sitar) with some pretty heavy themes (racism, drug addiction, death) for an early seventies pop album, and the second one is more soft-rock/country but still has some great songs. Terry Jacks wrote some great pop songs, and his ex-wife Susan had a damn beautiful voice.

ON EDIT: I should also say that I'm not always sure what bands are Canadian and which ones aren't, so I may be forgetting an obvious favorite. For example, I like the Band, but didn't know until ZombyWoof posted below that they were mostly Canadian. I thought they were from upstate New York, for reasons I'm not exactly sure of...!

A Paula Abdul-type knockoff. She put out two albums and then went into hibernation.

Other than that, I think she was on a show called You Can't Do That On Television.

You just watch, Britney Spears will follow the same path...Kids show, pop tartlet, goes into hiding, then becomes respected screecher....!

If ever there was a band made for the US audience, it's them. I love them to death and have since "Up To Here"; Gordo Downie is a helluva frontman..

SNL definitely helped Nelly Furtado, though. (I like her newer album, "Folklore" quite a bit, which is weird since I'm not too fond of her voice.)

Geez, nothing much goes on around here (Courtenay). I mean there are musicians with talent--there's LOTS of artistic talent of all sorts out here--but not many that seem to be recording.

Here's all of the Vancouver Island musicians I can think of:

I love Canada. I have Canadian cousins in Saskatchewan and BC. Many of Gordon Lightfoot's songs bring back good memories of times I have spent in Canada. Here's one:

Great punk rock band that's been around since the late '70s.

I grew up on Rush and still appreciate them, I liked Honeymoon Suite and Triumph and Bryan Adams when I was in high school in the '80s, and now I like this one Montreal indie experimental ensemble called Godspeed You Black Emperor.
