Someone PLEASE push & prod me.
I just accepted another job last night, and I have to tell my boss today. (Well, I don't HAVE to, because as of now, it's almost 4 weeks notice, but I want to). I feel like such a prick, because it happens to be really bad timing, and my boss is really, really cool. I gotta do it though, and I can't seem to work up the nerve to actually walk into his office and drop the bomb.

I also know that this kind of thing happens all the time, and I shouldn't be that worried, I just can't help but feel bad. And I'm sure he'll totally understand and be cool about it. But, what can I say, I'm a wreck right now.

OK, so I need some pushing.

1. Take a deep breathe....
You'll be doing him a favor the sooner you tell him.

2. Yeah, I know.
Damn empathy! I can't shake it off. Yet, I know what you say is true.

3. It really will be okay
Just go in and do it. The sense of relief afterward will make you wonder why you tortured yourself so long putting off the inevitable.

Good luck!

4. Tell him that you are sorry
but it is the opportunity that you have wanted for a long time. Also, tell him you are giving a month's notice-long enough to hopefully hire a replacement and for you to train them.
Also, let him know that you really enjoyed working for him and that you are excited about the new job but will really miss everyone at this job, especially him.
If you break it gently, it might go over better.

6. Yeah, I definitely planned on...
...being gentle. I'm going to give him a thorough explanation, so that he'll understand that I'd be an idiot to pass it up.

8. Obviously.
Like I said, it's bad timing because 2 weeks ago, one of the best employees died of a sudden heart attack, who incidentally IS hard to replace. So he's all worried about that. Plus, a consultant may make a big change to the company when he comes in 3 weeks, so he's also really worried about that. So I feel bad for throwing more shit on his pile, not because I think I'm difficult to replace.

and then do it. The more notice you give the easier it will be on him.
