Recommend a really great movie you love but probably no one else...
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 01:10 PM by LynneSin
..has watched or heard of.

I love this lil independant movie that came out in 1996 call "The Day Trippers" Hope Davis stumbles across a love letter someone wrote to her husband. Davis, along with her parents (including the wonderful Ann Meara as her annoying, nosy mother), sister Parker Posey and sister's boyfriend done by Liev Schreiber decide to go into the city and track down the husband to find out why he is having an affair. The husband was amazingly played by Stanley Tucci. The movie was fresh with all sorts of side plots that meshed well into the movie.

Rent this fun little indie movie!!

1. I loved "The Day Trippers"
I just posted a picture of Stanley Tucci in a "Sexiest Bald Actor" thread.

My movie pick is "Happy Accidents" as always. I'm not going to be happy until everyone I know has seen this movie.

7. He's such a great actor - he was great in "Big Night"
He plays one of the Italian brothers who runs a small italian restaurant struggling to complete with the competition across the street. The other brother was played by Tony Shaloub and the brothers were exact opposites (tucci was the outgoing womanizer, shaloub was the introvert who had a crush on flower lady played by Alison Janney)

I fell in love with Stanley because of that movie. Desperately, totally, hopelessly in love.

Of course, it's absolute food porn.

56. You will love it.
About 3 years ago we had a very timid receptionist that I used to converce with. We talked about movies a lot. I was telling her about this movie, and I said it was a great foriegn film. She thought I said porn film. I was wondering why she was getting so perturbed. I asked why she was getting so mad and she said she didn't like that kind of movie. I said, "I lent it to Carl and his wife and they loved it. This movie was made before the had stunt men and the actors did all of their own stunts." We finally got it sorted out and laughed about for a long time. LOL!

19. Big Kahuna
stars Kevin Spacey, Danny Devito, and Peter Falcinelli and that's it. Spacey and Devito give their best performances, IMHO. they play three lubricant salesmen at a covention in Topeka, Kansas. Their aim is to get the "the big kahuna" the guy who owns a major company who, if he buys their product, can make their company quite rich. The entire film takes place in one room, so it's completely dialogue driven, aside from some comedic outbursts by Spacey. I highly recommend it, like i said, Spacey and Devito give their best performances.

29. yes, The Big Kahuna
Great flick about balancing morality and business.

I can see how it wouldn't be so high up on the radar, but it was brilliant.

It was weird seeing Peter Facinelli years later as some tough undercover street cop in that Fox series "Fastlane" after seeing him as such a Jesus Freak in Big Kahuna.

French film with english subtitles.

Young women runs away from home to avoid being sold into marriage ... falls into prostitution and drug abuse (well, she didn't fall, she was pushed/forced).

She is befriended by a woman ... and they help each other achieve a better life.

Some parts hard to watch, but excellent movie! Some parts touching, some parts funny, some parts horrific.

I highly recommend this one!

38. A few almost perfect movies
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover. You've probably heard about it but not seen it. It was very controversial. Ugly and brutal and often disgusting. But a great movie.

Urbania. It's about grief. From the reviews I've read and comments I've heard very few people seem to understand what's happening in this movie. Seemed pretty obvious to me. I've watched it over and over. I love this film.

Hellraiser. Ok it's splatterpunk. But the real story is about how love can lead you to damnation (Julia) or salvation (Kirsty). Not for the squeamish. Very very sexy in a very disturbing way.

The Law of Desire. Spanish film (with bad subtitles). Women on the Verge of A Nervous Breakdown. I can't decide which of these is the better movie. They are both so damn good.

Khash.

39. Children of Dune, and The Siege
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 03:00 PM by ContraBass Black
Children of Dune is a science fiction masterpeice, beautiful in every way.

The Siege is about terrorism and civil liberties. In a nutshell, there are a series of terrorist attacks in New York, so the military comes in, locks down the city, converts a stadium into a concentration camp, and rounds up every young Arab male.

46. amargosa/odd man out/the castle/any albert maysles documentary
lovers and other strangers (1970) bea arthur

amargosa is a great documentary about a woman originally from nyc who is about 75 at the time of the film. she is a dancer and a free spirit. she moved out to a california desert town many yrs ago with her husband. this is her story of her unique quest to express her self and her art in a very small and remote town that hasnt experienced someone like her before.

odd man out is a drama from 1947 i think. with james mason on the lam. he is part of a political group akin to ira?

the castle is australian comedy from 1996. the government wants to expand the airport. in order to do so they are forcing surrounding people to sell their homes. this is darryls crusade to fight back against the govt taking away his "castle". which by the way he never stops renovating or adding to but doesnt seem to finish anything. his kids buy all kinds of junk parts and the place is a wreck. but its his wreck and hes going to fight all the way to the countrys supreme court if he has to

hows the serenity?

albert maysles - my brothers keeper, gimme shelter, medium cool, salesman, grey something (about jackie os mentally unstable cousin and aunt who live in crumbling mansion on long island)
etc

i could name a lot more but i dont have my list

"Big Trouble" got pulled right after September 11th because of subject matter. It is easily one of the funniest movies we've ever seen. I detest the comedy stylings of Tim Allen, but there are so many other great actors in this movie I can live with it (Rene Russo, Stanley Tucci, Dennis Farina :loveya:, Janeane Garofolo, Patrick Warburton's naked buttocks, on and on and on.)

Rent it. You won't regret it.
