Last week I posted about the heavy helicopters flying around the mountains
Today I was returning home on the last mile of paved county road before the 2-miles of gravel road into my mountain place. In a clearing on the side of the road I spotted a big V, done in a white shiny material, laid out in the grass near the road. It looked professionally done and each side of the V is about 25 feet long. The only purpose it could serve is as some kind of a signal to aircraft. If the shiny material is reflective it could probably be seen at night from a helicopter with a spot light.

Maybe I am paranoid, but it does bother me that the point of the V is aimed at my house.
:wtf:

Whoa. I'm not one of those black-helicopter conspiracy nuts, but
this would bother me as well.

It could be a radar reflector (if the material is metallic) or an infrared reflector for NVGs if not metalllic, rather than a visible-light reflector. But why so big?

Did you get a close-up look at it? Do you know the people who own the land?

4. I think it is on the right-of-way.
It is next to a Christian camp called The Wilds, owned by the Carolina Baptist Convention.

6. Being the climate we live in now, that would concern me a little too.

It's like what do you say about something like that?

Ive heard a few what I call woo-woo stories about the helicopters lately, and other people are noticing the interesting occurances as well. Yes, of course it could be some coincidence, it could be something else too. Always good to have the antennae raised a bit.

Do you know any policeman and/or county officials you would feel comfortable talking to about it?

Probably ought to go ahead and take some pictures of it. Post them here if you want.

9. Sounds like the Carolina Baptist Convention
is getting a visiter.....can you pull it up and throw it away? Rather is the type of plastic (1mil or so)that can be rolled up and taken? Do it....throw it away, so they don't know where to land....if you get caught just say, you thought it was garbage laying by the side of the road....

10. Were the sides of the V at right angles?
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 06:02 PM by Ready4Change
Like the corners of a box?

Do you ever see planes flying aerobatics?

For aerobatics competitions, planes are required to keep their manuevers inside a "box." The limits of this box are marked on the ground in various ways. The one I helped set up used white plastic sheeting staked into the ground.

There will be a right angled V at each corner of the box, and there are T markers on the "sides" of the box, and an X in the middle.

If there is a competition, say, this coming weekend, you're likely to see occasional planes doing loops and rolls during the days this week, and LOTS all weekend.

If so, go down to the airport and watch. Usually fun people willing to share info about what's going on. But it's NOT an airshow. The planes are generally a couple thousand feet up, and they are flying for precision. Very technical.

Or, it could be marks for flying saucers?

12. OK. I just talked with my Transylvania County Sheriffs Detective buddy ..
He thinks that it is a benchmark for high-altitude aerial mapping. But he is not sure. He is looking into it for me. Fabric "Vs" in the days of differential GPS sounds like a stretch to me. Eh, Vern?
