CSI: For an ex-stripper, Catherine seems a bit naive re: alternative sex
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 05:07 PM by Mike Daniels
Just an observation I've noticed in watching the past few seasons, but it seems that whenever an investigation takes the crew into a world of anything resembling "kink", Catherine always seems somewhat wigged out whether it be fur fetishes, leather/S&M, the swinging lifestyle, fat people fetishes, etc.

It just seems ironic that a woman who made her living peddling her flesh in her past should be so freaked out over this when Gil (who gets his jollies from riding roller coasters) looks like the only thing holding him back is the fact that he's on the job.

So, anyone else notice this or have a different perspective on things?

Yes, I'm at the end of the work day and just killing time....

1. I Have A Different Perspective
She was stripper not a prostitute, and even if she knew that some of her co-workers might have been moonlighting, it doesn't mean she listened to their "war stories", or even got involved.

She was also a mother, so what time she had to herself was spent raising her daughter, especially when you figure that her ex-husband
was such a dick.

2. I noticed the same thing about Law and Order
Any time alternative sexuality came up it was always looked at in the worst possible light. Rather than deal with it realistically, it was there to titillate the viewers and then get slammed as wrong. I can't speak to CSI because I haven't seen it, but what you say doesn't surprise me at all.

Khash.

3. Speaking of...
That is when I stopped watching that show, the episode where the people "get off" on dressing up like animals. That was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen.

4. there are people who get off on dressing like animals
can you blame a show for exploiting it for entertainment value?

5. It's just plot-thickener
Added to help counter the thinness you get when you spread one interesting idea over three TV shows...

6. Ever talked with a Born Again Christian Stripper?
The depths of denial that the human brain can contain without blasting into bits is amaaaaaaaazing.

7. the problem is
the show's producers want her to be a sympathetic character. If she knew about every kink the audience would assume that she had professional experience in that area. the other characters can have outside sexual kinks and the audience just assumes its from their private life. As a former exotic dancer however, the audience would assume that Catherine had performed a particular kink for cash and her character would be less sympathetic to most people. Think of it as a variation on the old "whore with a heart of gold" theme. A woman character can only have so much sexual experience before she's a slut.

I thought it interesting though, that they haven't shied from letting Catherine have a normal, sexual, relationship outside of work (the nightclub owner).
