19. bad weather makes you stay inside
and read. Unlike Calif. where you can go outside anytime and be an idiot. (This is good though regarding athlete development.)

4. NoVA has some pretty good schools, I thought
they don't teach creationism...the Southern part of the state is a different kettle of fish.

6. Oh Richmond has some excellent private schools
All of those fine young people go to W&M or UVa or Hampden Sydney or Randolph Macon (if they are heavy dope smokers) oh yes they are so good no one fails out and almost everyone gets an "A"...........

Meanwhile one of the public schools couldn't open in September because of the awful mold problem that was caving in roofs.

I think you see where I am going with this.

15. LOL
I get it, everyone is a scholar!

My friend Troy teaches 4th grade in Fort Lauderdale, in a middle class to fairly well-off area. He is from Mass, taught at an inner-city Boston school and a very affluent Boston suburb. He is a dedicated teacher, LOVES his students, but is eternally frustrated by the lack of focus on education in Florida, despite all the lip service given to standards. He said that his poor, inner-city kids in Boston scored better on standardized tests than his middle-class 4th grade class. While I don't think standardized tests are an accurate barometer of competence, I think Mass. spends more money per student than Florida, and this may have something to do with it. The teachers are paid peanuts in FL.

17. Yes Rose you are right
No Creationism :)
However Northern VA is not liberal, well Arlington and Alexandria I think lean Dem with Jim Moran but despite being diverse its pretty republican but nice place.

30. Yes they do..one main reason I moved
Some of the best school systems in the nation.

But the cost of living is just silly especially in some parts where you can literally be in the boonies surrounded by cows and stuff paying over a 1/4 of a million for a freakin' townhouse.

13. ?? NC and MD are both in the top half too
and WV does better in this ranking than in income and health where it's at the bottom. Montana is very poor so I'm perplexed at how well it came out on this index. BTW, I've lived almost all my life in southern VA and never heard of creationism being taught in public schools. Hope to God it isn't!

5. Ohio #22 reminds me of a election 2000 story
One of my best friends (a Dem but not really active) was over and we watched the last debate. Like the one's previously you could hear laughter all down the street when W had just spoken.

At the end of it (Gore crushed in it) ABC went to a focus group in Ohio. My friend is a physical trainer and manager of a health club so he is reall into it and the group of Ohians (I was born there) they had tended to be on the heavy side. When asked who they thought had won one lady said that Bush had clearly won and most everyone else nodded their heads.

My friend lurched towards the TV and yelled,

"Jesus! They are fat AND stupid!!!!!!!"

I'll never forget that.

8. My friend has a similar story
Edited on Thu Oct-09-03 02:47 PM by RationalRose
He works in downtown Boston, and he was sitting in Post Office Square waiting for a friend for drinks. Fox-25 News was outside getting reactions to 'Mission Accomplished'. He watched the interviewer stopping people and asking them their opinions. He overheard many critical Bush comments and there were three folks who gave neutral and positive reactions. Guess who made it on the evening news?

:eyes:

On edit: Sorry to hijack your thread, Martin.

9. I want to know...
what all 21 factors are because I refuse to believe Texas is as high as number 34 (and I'm from Texas so I can say that). Given all th estats I've ever seen about our education system here we're always just ahead of Mississippi and Alabama at the very bottom. There's got to be something weird going on. That line about "support of safe, efficiently run public schools" makes me wonder.

A coworker down in Houston found a puppy at their apartment complex. They printed up a flyer and asked me proofread it for them. It included the following line:

FOUND: Brown doxin puppy.

When I told them that it was actually spelled "dachshund", they told me that they knew that, but that most of the people they knew spelled it "doxin", cause there's too many letters the other (correct) way.

10. Boy......it's no surprise that the bottom 20...
...are infested with Right-Wing F*ckers.
Actually years ago there was a southern college that did a study on
intelligence and political affiliation.
The Dem's scored 12 to 16 points higher in tests...

Big surprise...huh?!!

I mean, I did move to the state 2 years ago (from Pennsylvania #7 - and that's pretty decent knowing that you have Pittsburgh on one side of the state, Philadelphia on the other and 1950 Alabama in the middle)
