Anyone remember when fundies would play records backwards....
claiming they could hear satanic messages hidden in them when played backwards. They found stuff in Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd and even John Denver Recordings.

I've come to conclusion the reason all these cartoon and other non-human creatures are being outed is due to the demise of the Vinyl Record. Since they no longer can search for hidden messages played backwards I guess their new focus is outting fictional characters

Seriously!

3. I find that stuff really interesting
I did a report on it for a Public Speaking class I took in college.
There actually are a good deal of fairly intelligible "backmasked" messages in songs; I tried out a couple dozen or so as one aspect of "research" for the report. Though I think most of them were put in by the bands to drive the fundies nuts!

I have a "classic" fundy anti-rock book, Why Knock Rock? by the Revs. Dan and Steve Peters. It discusses backmasking and all the "objectionable" material to be found in rock music. Published in the early eighties, the focus is most on heavy metal. It's a very fun read; really shows how fundies get wrapped up heavily in certain trends and then move on as quickly as the trends fade, just like the general public does.

I also think a reason that the controversy has shifted away from "backmasking" is because now if artists want to say something controversial they just put it right on the album forwards!

20. I played the Mr. Ed theme song backwards over the radio once.
You could faintly hear a sort of backwards horse-chuckle and some words, like so: "A-huck, a-huck, a-huck, a-huck, I sing this song for Satan..."

5. It's because satan doesn't need to work through music anymore
he's got an agent in the White House who is running everything just as well as any malignant-demon-from-hell-bent-on-the-destruction-of-all-that-is-good-and-decent-in-the-world could hope for.

Who needs bad metal bands anymore?

7. I remember
Gawd yes, I remember. I was in high school in South Mississippi of all places and the hysteria was overwhelming.

My brother fell in with the uber-fundies for a while, burned his albums, cut his hair and started singing in a Jaysus band.

He gave me a tape with some fundie whackjob back-masking rock tunes. He lost me when the guy on the tape said "I'm gonna play this backwards and you're going to hear......"

Of course I am, you told me what I was going to hear before you played it.

The hysteria raged on for a while, then died out, like most other fads.

That one was funny too, though I admit it kinda scared me when I was a kid.

12. that too
If I remember right, that was going on about the same time as the wave of "metal hysteria" in my previous post. These people are so frightened of anything and everything it is hilarious and sad at the same time.

8. Honest to goodness- the "Fat Albert" theme has a satanic message.
I had a radio show back in college. One time I cued up a TV toons record that included the Fat Albert theme song. As I ran the record backwards, the line "It's Faaaaat Albert!" played back as "I looooove Satan!". I was dumbfounded.

9. I remember them doing that
Wasn't it Judas Priest that put a message on one of their albums...can't remember which one......just for those people that said "drink milk it's good for you"? I know one of the bands did it, and i'm pretty sure it was Judas Priest.

10. Revolution #9 is double plus scary backwards
There's no mistaking the "turn me on dead man" in there, and I swear we heard a really freaky "Satan look at me" when we did it way back when on that album, but I've never been able to reproduce it digitally with a CD.

The Led Zepplin one, while there, is kinda silly.

Floyd did it on purpose. Hilarious!

13. CDs make it easier to find satanic messages
Slap it into your computer, copy it, play it backwards. Takes no thought at all which should please the fundies.

The only backward message I ever found was in a KaTe Bush song. I think it was "Watching You Without Me" but i may be wrong. What she had done was sing a lyric, listen to it backward, and then learn to sing it backward phonetically. And it wasn't even remotely Satanic.

But anyone remember the Judas Priest court case? Where they were blamed for a kid who tried to commit suicide because of backwards satanic messages in their music. I saw the kid's parents interviewed. If they'd been my parent's I would have tried to top myself, too.

Khash.

Odd, that looks like Welsh!

I wanna do this some day:

Record a really happy funny rock song and record a Satanic message in the BG and reverse it, so that if people do play it backwards, they'll hear all the demons of Hell being summoned forth to consume the blood of the innocent!

17. Here's some backmasking sites
Hell even Justin Timberlake has backmasking

http://www.triplo.com/ev/reversal/

Hell, if Backwards Masking really worked I'd be the leader of the church of Satan for all the Led Zeppelin I've listened to in my lifetime. Ironically I turned out to be a pretty well-adjusted Christian instead!

22. Backwards masking is cool.
My favorites are the 2 in Stairway to Heaven, Hotel California, Badlands (Bruce Springsteen), Brass in Pocket (Pretenders) and Stevie Wonder's "I just called to say I love you". The Reverend Wildman (sp?) provided endless laughs with this stuff.

23. Actually, Floyd put that message in there on purpose
you can hear it when you play "The Wall" forwards. Backwards it says: "Congratulations, you have found the secret message. Send your answers to Old Pink, care of the funny farm." I believe the question was: "What shall we use, to fill, the empty spaces where we used to talk?"
The "my sweet satan" is pretty clear on "Stairway to Heaven" but I still wonder what the lyrics would say played backwards.
The rest of it was kind of a stretch. You can hear it if you are told what to listen for.
There was a morning DJ in the Twin Cities who used to play all the backward messages that he could find.

24. I think that the fundies used satanic records for fund raising purposes.
As in "the devil worshipers are taking over the world. Send us $20 dollars and we will fight them".

Now it's "Gays are taking over the world through cartoon characters. Look at Marge Simpson's sister. Send us $50 dollars and we will fight the gays from taking over the world and making your kids gay".

Hey, it works or the fundies wouldn't use it.
