ANNAPOLIS, Maryland (Reuters) -- Maryland's first lady was only joking when she said she would like to shoot pop star Britney Spears, but it is no longer a laughing matter.

Kendel Ehrlich, wife of the state's Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich, was criticizing what she views as the entertainment industry's negative influence on youth, during a domestic violence prevention conference last week in the city of Frederick.

"Really, if I had an opportunity to shoot Britney Spears, I think I would," Ehrlich laughingly told the audience, accusing the 21-year-old Grammy Award-nominated singer of exaggerating the importance of sex for young girls.

Elected officials and their families really need to watch what they say. Not that it was a surprise to learn she is a republican. That's the republican answer to anything they don't like - censor, kill, or criminalise.

This is also so typically republican in that sex is a horrible thing, but gun violence is OK.

I mean, come on... None of us would ever say something silly, like wishing all republicans dead or anything... :7

5. Yeah, it was a bad thing to say, but I agree with her.

I'd really like to shoot Britney Spears, too (for reasons I outlined in the GD Forum thread on this a couple days ago). Then again, I'm not a public figure (and I'm posting quasi-anonymously), so who gives a rat's ass?

It's simply not the same as: "Id like to shoot Britney Spears" accompanied by :eyes:

To illustrate: The next worse thing she could have said is: "if I had an opportunity to shoot Britney Spears, and I had a gun in my hand, I think I would..."
