People of the Lounge: A thought
Does anyone here think that we will ever again see the likes of such 80's phenomenons as:

Hands Across America
Live Aid
The Royal Wedding
Luke & Laura
Who Shot JR?
E.T.
Star Wars

Or are we all just too different now?

I think too much of our innocence is gone for some of that stuff.

9. Me too
It makes me sad. I remember being a child and watching the Wizard of Oz and being scared out of my mind when the scene with the flying monkeys came on. My kids at the same age are like "Oh kewl! Flying monkeys!"

I think that is very sad.

13. There was a story this morning on the Today show about the MPAA rating
system & how much it has changed in the last 10 years.
Things that would have been rated R 10 years ago are now PG-13.
The panelist they had on was saying that the ratings need to be updated, and that many films that are rated PG-13 should be PG 15 or 16.
I agreed with her.

When did it become so normal to have pretty suggestive sexual & violent stuff available for kids so young?

Not all PG-13's are bad, but some really push the envelope

17. too true
However, it seems like many parents refuse to say no to their children, thus many children are being exposed to adult themes a lot earlier than I ever was at that age.

Parents, your job is to be a parent, not to be your kids' best friend.

19. Thats what it ALL boils down to
When your children are born you become a PARENT.
NOT a pal.

I'm ridiculously close to my mom now & tell her everything- but when I was growing up she was my mother, not my friend. Granted she was interested in my life etc. and we got along, but it wasnt like she was trying to be my age.

I see people do that & all I think is BIG MISTAKE..

I've heard more than 1 child tell their mom or dad that they dont want a FRIEND they want a PARENT.

Sad when the kid realizes that before the parent does

"I do believe in spooks. I do believe in spooks. I do. I do. I do believe in spooks."
Not to mention the bad-tempered apple trees.

28. I remember being scared of Scooby-Doo
I had nightmares when I was four or five about being deep in the haunted landscape and watching the Mystery Machine roll by far in the distance.

That being said... There are quite a few people (Hindus) who have a flying monkey as one of their most cherished heroes, so I wouldn't so much say we've lost our innocence but that our culture has changed.

11. Luke and Laura...the ultimate rape fantasy.
I can still remember the music they played during the scene. It was "Rise" by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.

20. ahhh...
movies with weird storylines and crappy effects...

although enemy mine has one of the most prevalent plots i've ever seen in scifi: where by circumstances even the most alien of opponents becomes decidedly less alien by circumstance.

lots of shows have done it, probalby bc it makes a good point. xenophobia is a losing strategy: learning to love your enemy is decidedly more successful.

27. lol.
i don't think it's just a buddy movie. many shows/movies have done this theme, and to good effect (the theme of an enemy becoming a friend, for whatever reason.)

it has been a while since i've seen it tho.

that E.T. is better than Toy Story or The Iron Giant or Monsters Inc?
Certainly we have not seen the last piece of dreck to be over-hyped to death until the talking heads call it a "phenonomenon".

26. I actually miss the '80s.
Yeah, it was the era of Reagan/Bush, but it was my early childhood and I remember a lot for that time period. Things like Live Aid, Hands Across America, and "We Are the World" seem so sweet and well-meaning. I think people are too nasty to embrace that stuff now. It's a shame, but at least we can always revisit that time period nine times a day on VH1 retrospective shows.
